Apogee Calgary
Calgary
Do you believe children learn best when they are curious, moving and doing real work that matters?
Apogee Calgary is looking for a creative, warm and adaptable Educational Coach to join our small team and help our young leaders grow into courageous, capable and compassionate people.
About Apogee Calgary
Apogee Calgary is a family-centred micro school in Southwest Calgary, Alberta, and affiliated with Apogee Strong, that began in the United States. Founded by Samantha Smith, a certified Alberta teacher and Mom who left the public system after more than a decade in the classroom to help change what education looks like. Our mission is “to raise courageous, capable and compassionate young leaders who are prepared for life, not just the next test.”
Our core academics are aligned with the Alberta curriculum and are rooted within our project work. Group and individual projects incorporate life skills and entrepreneurship so that our leaders are prepared for the real world. Our close-knit community lives by the Apogee Code and its seven values: Integrity, Bravery, Compassion, Honesty, Politeness, Honour and Loyalty. These sit alongside our school values of Family, Physical Fitness & Education, and Freedom & Sovereignty.
The Apogee Calgary program and how our coaches impact the success of our leaders
Our leaders learn in small, mixed-age crews with individual learning plans and personal goals. Each day is crafted to engage both the heart and the mind: a Morning Huddle with Socratic discussion, core academics (reading, writing and math) taught in a practical, real-world context, physical fitness and plenty of outdoor time, real-world projects and experiences, community leadership, campus jobs and responsibilities, daily leader’s choice, and an annual entrepreneur market.
Coaches make this happen. Rather than lecturing, an Apogee coach facilitates learning through real-world experiences and projects that focus on the leaders’ interests and promote critical thinking. As learning is guided by the leaders, our coaches must be creative, flexible and adaptable, ready to ask the next thought-provoking question,
follow a leader’s spark, and turn it into meaningful learning tied to Alberta outcomes. Just as importantly, coaches model character every day: every coach lives by the Apogee Calgary Code, upholding its values at school, at home and beyond.
Why should you become an Apogee Coach?
- Teach the way you always hoped you could. No overcrowded classrooms and no worksheet treadmill: a small crew with real relationships and the freedom to dive deeper into learning concepts that engage each leader.
- See the difference you make. Help leaders find their strengths, set goals and take ownership of their learning, and watch their confidence grow day by day.
- Learn outdoors and on the move. Bring learning to life through nature, fitness, off-campus visits, hands-on projects and unplugged exploration.
- Shape something new. Join a growing school early and help build its culture, crews and traditions alongside an experienced, certified Alberta teacher.
- Be part of a community. Partner with families who are deeply invested in their children’s growth, character and curiosity.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and facilitate hands-on, project-based learning experiences built around leaders’ interests and aligned with the Alberta curriculum.
- Lead Socratic discussions and use open-ended questions to build critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Support each leader’s individual learning plan and goals in reading, writing and math, and adapt in the moment as interests and needs change.
- Lead and join daily physical activity and outdoor learning, both on and off campus.
- Guide character development, conflict resolution, campus jobs and community leadership, modelling the Apogee Calgary Code.
- Observe and document learning (notes, photos and work samples) and share progress with the director and families.
- Keep a safe, organized and welcoming learning environment for all leaders.
- Maintain and hold high standards and continually contribute to the success of the program, our leaders, coaches and families.
