About Stoppler Hughes
Stoppler Hughes is an HR consulting firm that helps organizations build stronger workplaces. We work alongside leaders on everything from everyday employee questions to complex people challenges, recruitment, HR systems, long-term planning, special projects, and strategy planning and execution. Our clients span a range of industries and stages of growth, so the work is varied, practical, and meaningful.
The opportunity
We’re looking for an HR professional who knows their craft and enjoys working with people. You can build trust quickly, ask thoughtful questions, and give managers explicit, practical advice. You’re comfortable saying what you recommend and explaining why, while recognizing when a matter calls for another perspective or further review.
As an HR Consultant, you’ll support several clients with the backing of the Stoppler Hughes team. Some days you’ll help a manager navigate a difficult employee conversation, other days you’ll develop a policy, improve an onboarding process, lead recruitment, or help a client plan what their HR function needs next.
You do not need previous consulting experience. If you’ve built a strong foundation of 5+ years in a generalist, advisor, or business partner role and are excited by the variety of consulting, we’d like to hear from you.
What you’ll do
Build client relationships
- Serve as a trusted HR contact for assigned clients and develop a strong understanding of their people, operations, and goals.
- Meet with leaders regularly to clarify priorities, provide updates, and identify issues before they become larger problems.
- Communicate with warmth and confidence, including when your advice involves a difficult conversation or an unpopular decision.
Provide practical HR advice
- Advise clients on employee relations, performance management, attendance, onboarding, offboarding, policy interpretation, and other day-to-day HR matters.
- Assess the facts, identify risks and options, and recommend a clear course of action that fits the client’s circumstances.
- Prepare accurate, thoughtful, written advice and documentation that clients can use with confidence.
- Work with senior colleagues on complex or sensitive matters and know when to escalate a concern.
Deliver HR projects
- Develop and improve policies, handbooks, job descriptions, HR processes, and manager resources.
- Support HR assessments, compensation research, engagement initiatives, and people planning.
- Help clients implement practical systems and processes that will work in their day-to-day operations.
Support recruitment and talent management
- Partner with clients on recruitment, from defining the role and writing the posting through interviews and offers.
- Help leaders strengthen onboarding, performance conversations, employee development, and retention.
Contribute to the team
- Manage priorities across several clients and keep work moving without losing sight of quality or deadlines.
- Share ideas, resources, and lessons learned with your Stoppler Hughes colleagues.
- Spot opportunities to provide additional support when you see a genuine client need.
What you bring
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources. Equivalent experience of 10+ years of experience will be considered.
- Progressive HR experience with broad exposure to generalist work, including employee relations and advising managers.
- Sound knowledge of HR practices and applicable employment standards, with the judgment to research or seek input when an issue falls outside your expertise.
- A natural ability to connect with people and earn the confidence of leaders with different personalities and working styles.
- The confidence to offer a recommendation, explain your reasoning, and handle respectful pushback.
- Strong writing skills and careful attention to detail. Your work should be ready to put in front of a client.
- The ability to manage several priorities, follow through on commitments, and adapt when a client’s needs change.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence and reliable vehicle for travel to client sites in the Edmonton area.
- A CPHR designation is an asset. Experience in a consulting firm is welcome, but not required.
