Heavy Equipment Operator (Shear) – Mobile Traveling Company: SMR Metals Job Type: Full time Travel Required: Yes – Mobile Projects Job Overview SMR Metals is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator (Shear) for high-production mobile scrap processing projects. Operators will run well-maintained John Deere and Liebherr excavators equipped with LaBounty hydraulic shears. Steel must be processed into: HMS (Heavy Melt Steel) P&S; (Plate & Structural) Material must meet mill-ready specifications and be clean, properly sized, and production-ready. This is a production-based role for operators who take pride in their work and equipment. Work Schedule & Hours Minimum 50 hours per week guaranteed Up to 80 hours per week available for those who want additional hours Overtime paid after 44 hours Extended out-of-town assignments We have steady work. Operators who want to earn will have the opportunity. Key Responsibilities Operate excavators equipped with hydraulic shear attachments Process scrap into mill-ready HMS and P&S; Ensure material is clean and properly prepared Flip and shim shear blade sets (training available if needed)
Perform daily inspections and preventative maintenance Assist with physical labor when required Maintain strict safety standards Operators are expected to treat company equipment with care and professionalism — as if it were their own. Clean machines, proper greasing, daily checks, and reporting issues immediately are mandatory. Requirements Required: 2+ years operating an excavator with shear attachment Experience processing scrap steel Willingness to perform physical labor Strong understanding of hydraulic systems Must have personal vehicle Willingness to travel and work extended hours Valid driver’s license Preferred: Experience flipping and shimming shear blade sets (training available) Rail car processing experience Mechanical troubleshooting ability Leadership experience Travel & Perks Fuel paid for travel outside 100km Company-paid hotel accommodations during out-of-town work Per diem for meals Steady year-round scrap processing work
