About the role
Calgary Landscape Inc. is looking for experienced, dependable operators to help keep our clients’ parking lots and access areas clear during winter weather. You will operate plow-equipped trucks, skid steers and loaders, with sand truck assignments when additional sanding support is needed.
This is weather-dependent, on-call work. Hours vary with snowfall and ice-control needs and are not guaranteed. There is no standby pay; this position pays for hours worked. It may suit someone seeking supplemental income, provided their other commitments allow them to meet the agreed callout availability.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate assigned plow trucks, skid steers, loaders and sand trucks within your training, license and company authorization.
- Clear contracted parking lots and assigned vehicle-access areas according to site maps, service instructions and dispatch priorities.
- Place snow in designated storage areas while protecting parked vehicles, curbs, landscaping and other properties, and keeping required access clear.
- Operate the sand truck when assigned and apply approved traction or de-icing materials according to site instructions, product requirements and equipment training.
- Complete pre-use, pre-trip and post-use inspections as applicable; report defects promptly and do not operate unsafe equipment.
- Monitor weather conditions relevant to your assignment, remain reachable during agreed on-call periods and respond promptly to dispatch callouts.
- Communicate delays, access problems, changing site conditions, material shortages and incomplete work to the supervisor.
- Complete accurate time, service, inspection and material-use records, including required site photos.
- Report hazards, near misses, incidents and property damage promptly.
- Follow site safety requirements, wear required protective equipment and report fatigue or conditions that prevent secure operation.
- Complete authorized routine equipment care, refueling, cleaning and end-of-shift handoff duties.
Required qualifications
- At least 1 year of snow-plowing experience.
- At least 1 year of skid steer operating experience.
- At least 1 year of sand truck operating experience.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driving abstract. Any additional license class or endorsement required for the assigned truck must be held before operation.
- Demonstrated ability to operate assigned equipment safely in winter conditions and around people, vehicles and buildings.
- Ability to read site maps, follow instructions and complete basic service records.
- English communication skills sufficient to understand safety instructions, communicate with dispatch and complete required records.
- Dependable attendance, reliable transportation to the assigned reporting location and the ability to meet agreed callout availability.
- Ability to perform the essential duties, including entering and exiting equipment and working outdoors in cold, snowy and icy conditions, with accommodation where required.
- Completion of applicable company orientation, practical equipment assessments and authorization before independent operation.
Preferred qualifications
- At least 1 year of loader operating experience.
- Commercial parking-lot snow removal and ice-control experience.
Schedule and working conditions
- On-call assignments based on weather and service requirements.
- Early mornings, evenings, overnight shifts, weekdays and weekends as needed.
- Shifts may be 8, 10 or 12 hours, depending on the assignment, conditions and safe-work requirements.
- Outdoor winter work and equipment operation in changing weather and visibility.
- Availability expectations and the required callout response time will be explained before accepting the position.
