Personal Support Worker - Uptown Core, Oakville - CAD$108.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We are seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 93-year-old woman living in a retirement home in Oakville. She has been diagnosed with dementia for approximately three years and uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility. While the retirement home provides meals, laundry, and cleaning services, she needs companionship and social engagement beyond weekly family visits. She tends to stay in her room and is hesitant to participate in building activities, likely due to memory challenges and social discomfort. The family has tried care services before but found the caregivers too young or difficult for their mom to understand due to heavy accents.
Responsibilities:
The primary focus is providing meaningful companionship and social interaction. You will spend time sitting and visiting with the client, engaging her in conversation, and encouraging participation in activities. Light assistance with mobility using her walker or wheelchair may be needed, along with support for bathing or dressing. You should provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed, helping her feel comfortable and engaged. Encouraging her to attend building entertainment or take short walks (weather permitting) would be beneficial. The goal is to help her feel less isolated and more connected.
What We're Looking For:
We need someone who makes the client feel comfortable and at ease. You should be calm, patient, and bring positive energy to each visit. Reliability and consistency are essential, as is the ability to take initiative when needed. Strong communication skills with both the client and family are important.
You must have experience with dementia care and understand how to communicate effectively with someone experiencing memory challenges. The family specifically requests a mature caregiver who can connect with their mom on an appropriate level. Transparent English speaking ability is required. Experience with mobility assistance and personal care is necessary.
Schedule:
Two visits per week, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (2 hours per visit). The schedule is consistent and ongoing. Family members may be present for the first few visits to help with introductions and ensure a good fit.

Additional Considerations
The client is seeking a mature caregiver with appropriate age and dementia training who can engage meaningfully with a 93-year-old woman. Previous caregivers were too young with heavy accents that made communication difficult. The ideal caregiver should be able to sit and visit, hold conversations despite memory challenges, and help the client feel comfortable leaving her apartment. The caregiver should be calm, patient, bring positive energy, take initiative, communicate clearly with family, and make the client feel at ease. Experience working with individuals who are self-conscious about memory loss is essential.
