Job Description
We have a new opportunity for a Senior Human Factors Engineering Analyst to join our Ottawa team. Working with HFE and UX practitioners, engineers, customers, and end users, you will serve as a senior hands‑on practitioner and HFE technical authority supporting multiple programs. By applying HFE principles and relevant standards, you will help deliver safe, effective, and usable systems to our customers.
Responsibilities:
- Lead HFE activities across assigned programs, defining objectives, methods, deliverables, schedules, and measures of success.
- Serve as an HFE technical authority by providing direction, reviewing technical work, and ensuring activities reflect program risks and lifecycle needs.
- Conduct hierarchical and cognitive task analyses, workload and usability assessments, function and task allocation, workflow analysis, and human-performance assessments.
- Analyze user roles, tasks, operating environments, and system constraints to identify requirements, workload concerns, risks, and design opportunities.
- Translate qualitative and quantitative findings into requirements, task models, use scenarios, design guidance,
technical reports, and engineering change proposals.
- Work closely with systems, software, mechanical, safety, and verification teams to integrate HFE considerations into system architecture and design from the earliest stages of development.
- Maintain traceability between user needs, HFE requirements, design decisions, identified risks, and verification evidence throughout the system lifecycle using requirements-management and product-lifecycle-management tools such as IBM DOORS and PTC Windchill PDMLink.
- Interpret and apply relevant human‑factors, ergonomics, accessibility, and human‑system integration standards, including MIL‑STD‑1472 and applicable ISO and ANSI standards.
- Review requirements, specifications, designs, and verification evidence for HFE content and conformance, identifying gaps and recommending corrective actions.
- Identify human‑performance, usability, and human‑error risks, and collaborate with engineering and safety teams to develop and track mitigations.
- Lead workshops, design reviews, trade studies, and concept‑validation sessions, helping multidisciplinary teams reach evidence‑based decisions and align around user‑centred outcomes.
- Present HFE findings, technical risks, and design recommendations to engineering teams, program leadership, customers,
and other stakeholders in clear written and verbal formats.
- Estimate resource and schedule needs, identify delivery risks, and establish priorities with program and engineering leads.
- Mentor less‑experienced practitioners and develop reusable HFE methods, templates, and lessons learned.
Qualifications
Required:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in human factors engineering, ergonomics, psychology, kinesiology, industrial design, systems design engineering, computer science, HCI, or a related discipline with substantial human‑factors coursework.
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in human factors engineering, human‑system integration, ergonomics, HCI, UX research, UX architecture, or a related field.
- Hold, or meet all requirements to obtain, Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (CCPE), Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE), or Certified Human Factors Skilled (CHFP) accreditation.
- Hold, or meet all requirements to obtain, a minimum of Registered Membership with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).
- Experience with defence and aerospace systems.
- Experience conducting HFE analyses and usability assessments for complex systems and operational environments.
- Knowledge of systems engineering, requirements management, configuration control, and verification and validation.
- Experience working with or familiarity with AI/ML models
