Information Technology
Victoria or Vancouver Lower Mainland
BC Ferries is embarking on a bold, multi-year transformation of our technology and the way we work. This evolution is focused on strengthening the experience for both our customers and employees; while ensuring we continue to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable service—now and into the future.
As our vessels and terminals become increasingly connected, and we adopt modern platforms powered by advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, we’re looking for forward-thinking leaders and talented professionals who are excited by what’s possible. Leaders who not only embrace innovation, but who also know how to build, inspire, and empower teams to turn vision into reality.
If you thrive in complex, large-scale environments, enjoy driving enterprise-wide transformation, and are comfortable operating at the intersection of business strategy and technology delivery, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Join us and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of coastal transportation—where the challenge is significant and the impact is lasting.
The Opportunity
Transformation starts with asking the right questions.
As BC Ferries continues to evolve how we operate, serve our customers and support our people, we’re looking for a Principal, Business Capability & Transformation Design to help shape what comes next.
This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who can look beyond individual projects or technology solutions to understand the bigger picture: What capability do we need? Why does it matter? What needs to change? And what will it take to make that change successful? Working across the organization,
you’ll partner with business leaders, subject matter experts, technology teams and corporate partners to turn complex or ambiguous business needs into clear outcomes, transformation options and practical roadmaps. You’ll help identify capability gaps, connect initiatives to strategy and benefits, surface dependencies and readiness considerations, and ensure business-led initiatives are well defined before moving into detailed solution design or delivery.
You’ll bring structure to complexity, challenge assumptions constructively, and help leaders make informed decisions about where and how to invest in transformation. If you enjoy solving complex business problems, connecting strategy to action, and helping organizations think differently about how they work, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
Reporting to the Executive Director, Business Transformation, you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:
Shape Business Capabilities
- Partnering with business leaders and subject matter experts to identify current and future capabilities needed to achieve strategic and enterprise priorities;
- Developing capability maps, heat maps, maturity assessments and high-level roadmaps, and connecting capabilities to strategic outcomes, KPIs, customer and employee experience, operational performance, risk, resilience and benefits;
- Assessing capability gaps, overlaps, dependencies, fragmentation and areas of underinvestment across business domains, distinguishing between process, technology, data, roles, governance, policy, operating model and change needs;
- Supporting Business Sponsors in defining what capability is being built, why it matters, who owns the value case and how advantages will be realized;
- Translating ambiguous business demand into clear capability statements and outcome-based requirements, while challenging assumptions to ensure initiatives address the underlying business need rather than a pre-selected technology solution.
Design Transformation Options
- Leading structured discovery with Business Sponsors and subject matter experts to clarify problems, opportunities, desired outcomes, constraints, decision points and measures of success;
- Translating capability gaps into transformation themes, options, scenarios and sequencing considerations;
- Developing business-led transformation options that consider people, process, data, technology, governance, service delivery, vendors and change;
- Partnering with Enterprise Architecture and Technology Leads to explore feasible solution pathways while maintaining clear accountability for technical architecture decisions;
- Identifying cross-functional dependencies, integration points, readiness gaps, duplication and sequencing issues across programs, platforms and business domains;
- Preparing capability maps, problem statements, option papers, decision briefs, dependency views, transformation roadmaps and executive-ready recommendations.
Enable Readiness & Better Decisions
