IP Paralegal

Location: Remote (Canada only)

Reports to: Founder & CEO, working closely with in-house counsel The company is a clinical-stage, AI-native biotechnology company focused on translating scientific insights into medicines for severe, life-threatening diseases, particularly those underserved by traditional pharmaceutical development models.

The company is advancing a growing pipeline of therapeutics targeting difficult-to-treat cancers, including multiple glioblastoma programs, ultra-rare diseases, and other serious conditions with significant unmet medical needs. Its portfolio includes multiple active clinical trials, ongoing pharmaceutical manufacturing programs, and promising therapeutic candidates whose prior development pathways warrant renewed investigation.

The company maintains research and clinical collaborations with major North American institutions, including Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Toronto.

The company operates through a lean, highly specialized core team of approximately 10 professionals, supported by an extended network of roughly 50 clinicians and scientists across Canada and the United States. Its operating model is predominantly remote, with AI and autonomous agents deeply integrated across scientific, clinical, and business functions.

The team's long-term ambition is to become the world's largest sponsor of clinical trials, leveraging AI to fundamentally improve the speed, efficiency, and scale of drug development while bringing urgently needed medicines to patients.

The role The Paralegal owns the day-to-day management of a patent portfolio of several hundred patents and is growing quick, using AI to do the work of a much larger team.

This is a new role that doesn't exist elsewhere yet: you will build it from scratch and make it your own.

What You'll Do

- Manage the full IP portfolio: docketing, deadlines, status tracking and portfolio reporting.
- Own annuity and maintenance fee payments across jurisdictions so nothing lapses.
- Support patent filing and prosecution - prepare and file documents, track office actions and coordinate responses with in-house counsel and outside firms.
- Manage communications with patent offices (e.g. CIPO, USPTO, EPO) and external patent agents.
- Build AI-driven workflows and agents to automate portfolio tracking, document review, drafting support and reporting.
- Keep the portfolio organized and audit-ready as new drug programs and filings are added.

What we're looking for

- 2-8 years as a paralegal or legal assistant at a law firm or in-house legal team.
- AI-literate: already use AI in your daily work, know the difference between models and agents, and actively look for ways to apply AI rather than reasons it won't work.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with ownership of deadlines and follow-through.
- Self-directed and energized by building something new in a fast-moving startup.
- Clear, professional communicator, comfortable working remotely with a quiet, well-lit, professional video setup.

Nice to have

- Patent or IP experience: maintenance fees, docketing, patent office correspondence or work alongside patent agents (drafting not required).
- Experience in biotech, pharma or life sciences IP.
- Paralegal certificate or registered patent agent training.
- Familiarity with IP management tools (e.g. Anaqua, CPA Global/Clarivate, Alt Legal).
