About the Role The Kitimat Museum & Archives is creating a new position to build and run every part of the museum that earns revenue. This is a business development role inside a cultural institution. You will take ownership of our commercial programs, grow them, and turn them into a strong, diversified income base that supports the museum’s work for years to come. You will also lead all marketing, so the same person who builds the revenue programs decides how they are promoted.
This is a new role with real authority, a dedicated budget, and clear targets. It suits someone who wants to build something rather than maintain it.
What You Will OwnCommercial Operations
- Gift Shop: product selection, pricing, merchandising, inventory, and performance
- Consignment Art Program: artist relationships, curation of the offering, and sales
- Christmas Market: planning, vendor recruitment, logistics, and results
- School Programs & Workshops: development, pricing, scheduling, and growth
- Merchandise Development: new museum-branded products from concept to shelf
Business Development
- Identify, test, and launch new revenue streams
- Build business cases for new ideas and track their return
- Report on revenue performance against clear milestones
- Support corporate sponsorship development, in partnership with the Executive Director
Marketing & Promotion
- Develop and lead the museum’s overall marketing strategy
- Promote all revenue programs, events, and offerings
- Work with the curatorial and archives teams to turn their content and stories into social media and other communications
- Manage the marketing budget, including contracting graphic design and other specialist services as needed
Authority & Accountability You report directly to the Executive Director. You will manage a budget developed with the Executive Director,
and you have the flexibility to spend it in the way you judge most effective. You set pricing for products and programs. Sponsorships and any decision that could affect the museum’s reputation need Executive Director approval, and major commitments go to the Board.
You will start with clearly defined milestones. The goal is for our commercial operations to become self-sustaining within two to three years. That frees the museum’s operating grant to support programs that don’t earn income, such as expanded capacity for our archives and curatorial teams.
