The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a hands-on technical lead responsible for the mechanical engineering of modular process and water-treatment equipment packages from proposal and concept development through detailed design, fabrication, testing, and project closeout. The role requires strong skid-engineering capability across pressure vessels and other static equipment, valves, piping systems, package layout, and fabrication execution. The successful candidate will translate client requirements into safe, practical, code-compliant, and manufacturable solutions while providing technical leadership to multidisciplinary project teams, designers, suppliers, and fabrication partners
This position will be based at our Calgary Water Solutions location.
Principle Responsibilities and Duties
Lead mechanical engineering for modular skids and packaged systems, including vessels, tanks, piping, supports, platforms, and equipment interfaces.
Develop and review mechanical specifications, datasheets, design calculations, material selections, BOMs/MTOs, and technical documentation.
Review 3D models, layouts, piping isometrics, fabrication drawings, and equipment designs for constructability, operability, maintainability, and transportation requirements.
Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, client specifications, and project requirements.
Prepare technical requisitions, evaluate vendor proposals, and complete technical bid evaluations.
Provide technical support to fabrication facilities and subcontractors, including resolving shop queries, non-conformances, and design changes.
Participate in design reviews, shop inspections, pressure tests, FATs, hazard reviews, and lessons-learned activities.
Coordinate with process, piping,
electrical, instrumentation, structural, procurement, quality, project engineering, and project management teams.
Deliver mechanical engineering work within project scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
Support proposals with concept development, preliminary sizing, technical clarifications, risk identification, and cost/manhour estimates.
Establish and maintain standardized package designs and engineering practices to support efficient and cost-effective project execution.
Provide technical leadership and communicate with clients, suppliers, inspectors, engineering partners, and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Skilled Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA, or eligibility to obtain APEGA registration upon joining.
12+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience in EPC, packaged equipment, fabrication, or detailed engineering environments, including proposal support, cost optimization, standardization, and product/package development.
Demonstrated experience in the design and integration of pressure vessels, static equipment, valves, piping systems, and modular skid packages, with strong fabrication and shop-support expertise.
Working knowledge of applicable pressure equipment and piping codes, standards, and client specifications,
with experience in produced water treatment, oil-water separation, filtration, hydrocyclones, flotation, pumping, or similar process-treatment systems.
Hands-on experience with mechanical design and analysis tools such as COMPRESS, PV Elite, and CAESAR II, including preparation and review of engineering calculations and technical documentation.
Proficiency in 3D plant design and CAD systems, including AutoCAD, CADWorx, or similar platforms, with the ability to review and develop engineering and fabrication deliverables.
Solid knowledge of materials, welding, corrosion control, coatings, insulation, inspection, testing, pressure-equipment documentation, Canadian fabrication practices, regulatory requirements, and coordination with authorized inspectors, vendors, fabrication subcontractors, and external engineering consultants.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical reports and represent the company in client, supplier, and fabrication meetings.
Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
Ability to travel occasionally to client, supplier, fabrication, and project sites.
Ability to work in office, shop, and project‑site environments and follow all applicable safety requirements.
