Retail Store Manager
Customer Experience & Homeschool Resources
Heritage Resources | Steinbach, Manitoba
Approximately 25–40 hours per week, seasonally
About the Role
Heritage Resources is looking for an experienced retail leader to help manage and grow our business serving homeschool families.
This is an opportunity for someone with general manager, assistant manager, or retail supervisory experience who enjoys leading people, creating an excellent customer experience, and taking ownership of day-to-day operations.
You don't need to have homeschooled your own children or be an expert in homeschool curriculum when you start. What matters most is that you are an organized, dependable leader who enjoys helping people, is willing to learn, and genuinely appreciates the mission and values of faith-based homeschooling.
Working closely with the owners, you will help oversee store operations, lead and develop staff, serve customers, and gradually develop expertise in the curriculum and resources we offer.
The Heart of the Role
Heritage Resources exists to help homeschool families find the resources, confidence, and encouragement they need to educate their children well.
A significant part of the role involves helping customers choose curriculum. This requires someone who listens well, asks thoughtful questions, understands different family needs, and can confidently guide customers toward appropriate resources.
We are looking for someone who:
· Enjoys helping people and building genuine customer relationships.
· Is curious and willing to learn about homeschool curriculum, particularly faith-based resources.
· Can listen carefully and help customers navigate their options.
· Is comfortable making recommendations without being pushy.
· Respects homeschooling families and is aligned with the values and culture of our business.
· Can develop into a knowledgeable curriculum consultant and help train other staff.
Previous homeschooling experience and curriculum knowledge are assets, but are not required. We are happy to train the right person.
Store Management & Operations
Working closely with the owners, you will help oversee the day-to-day operation of the store.
Responsibilities include
· Providing excellent in-store customer service and curriculum consultations.
· Leading, supporting, and developing other staff.
· Opening and/or closing the store as required.
· Receiving shipments, unpacking books, and stocking shelves.
· Maintaining attractive, organized, and well-stocked displays.
· Processing purchases, returns, and other transactions through our POS system.
· Fulfilling and shipping online orders.
· Helping maintain accurate inventory and online product information.
· Responding to customer questions, including social media messages and DMs.
· Assisting with promotions, events, and other store initiatives.
· Handling routine customer concerns and day-to-day operational decisions.
· Creating a warm, knowledgeable, and welcoming environment for homeschool families.
We currently use Shopify, Shopify POS, and QuickBooks. Experience with these systems is an asset, but we are happy to train the right person.
Leadership & Growth
This is a position with significant trust, ownership, and opportunity for growth.
The Store Manager will work closely with the owners and gradually develop a strong understanding of all areas of the business. Over time, there will be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities, including aspects of purchasing and procurement.
We are looking for someone capable of eventually overseeing the store independently for extended periods when the owners are away.
Good judgment, initiative, reliability, problem-solving, and the ability to work independently without constant direction are essential.
Conferences & Travel
This position includes representing Heritage Resources at approximately 3–4 homeschool conferences each year, including conferences in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
Conference-related travel expenses will be covered by Heritage Resources.
Hours & Schedule
This is a year-round position with seasonally variable hours.
Our winter season is quieter, with approximately 25 hours per week, while our busiest late-summer and fall season may require approximately 40 hours per week.
There is some flexibility within the schedule.
Saturday availability is required during August and September, our busiest season. Saturdays are not generally required throughout the remainder of the year.
Because this is an in-person retail and leadership position, the successful candidate will need to have childcare arrangements during working hours.
We're Looking for Someone Who...
· Has experience in retail management, assistant management, team leadership, or a similar customer-facing role.
· Is organized, dependable,
and able to take initiative.
· Has strong interpersonal skills and enjoys serving customers.
· Is a natural leader who can support and develop other staff.
· Is comfortable making decisions and solving day-to-day problems.
· Can work independently while collaborating closely with the owners.
· Is willing to learn about homeschool curriculum and help customers find appropriate resources.
· Is comfortable learning retail and business systems.
· Is willing and able to receive shipments, unpack books, stock shelves, and fulfill orders.
· Is available for seasonal increases in hours and conference travel.
· Genuinely respects homeschooling and is comfortable working within the values and culture of a faith-based homeschool business.
Personal homeschooling experience, familiarity with faith-based curriculum, and experience homeschooling through high school are all assets, but none is a requirement.
A university or college degree is not required. Meaningful leadership experience, customer service ability, organizational skills, good judgment, and a willingness to learn are more important to us than formal credentials.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation will be based on experience and the scope of responsibility.
Advantages include
· Health Care Spending Account.
· Paid vacation.
· Paid conference travel.
· Some flexibility in scheduling.
· Opportunities for professional growth and increased responsibility.

The person in this role will play an important part in making that happen.
We are looking for a capable retail leader who enjoys people, takes pride in running an excellent store, and wants to contribute to a business with a meaningful mission.
