About Us
Since 2006, the Uxbridge Youth Centre (UYC) has been a safe, welcoming, and inclusive hub for youth ages 11 and up. We offer free daily programs, creative workshops, and a supportive drop-in space where young people can hang out, learn, and grow through arts, sports, cooking, and wellness activities.
What You’ll Do
We are looking for a friendly, approachable, and creative person to join our team as a Youth Program Facilitator and Mentor!
In this role, you will help run our daily after-school drop-in space, hang out with local youth, and facilitate fun activities like arts, sports, board games, and cooking. You will also help run our special initiative, "Youth Pathways To Thriving Futures," leading relaxed, supportive workshops that help youth build job skills, confidence, mental wellness, and leadership abilities.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Hang Out & Supervise: Create a safe, welcoming space during our daily drop-in hours where youth feel comfortable and supported.
- Lead Fun Activities: Coordinate everyday UYC favorites like arts and crafts, DIY projects, casual sports (like street hockey), board game nights, and drop-in cooking or snack prep. Adapt activities based on what the youth are excited about!
- Run "Thriving Futures" Workshops: Guide small group sessions centered around:
- Employment & Life Skills: Resume tips, interview practice, budgeting, and basic cooking/grocery planning.
- Wellness & Mental Health: Fun mindfulness exercises, positive coping tools, and supportive peer chats.
- Youth Leadership: Mentoring a group of youth leaders to help them plan their own events, like open mic nights or game tournaments.
- Connect with the Community:
Partner with local guest speakers, schools, and community members to bring cool career panels and experts into the centre.
- Track the Fun (and Impact): Keep simple notes on daily attendance, workshop participation, and short participant feedback surveys to help us measure the success of the program.
What We’re Looking For
- Background & Experience: A background (education or hands-on experience) in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, Recreation, Community Development, or a related field.
- Youth-Friendly Vibe: 1 to 2 years of experience working directly with youth (ages 11+), with an understanding of how to support diverse backgrounds and at-risk dynamics.
- Jack-of-All-Trades: Comfortable switching gears between leading a cooking workshop, playing a board game, talking about job skills, or helping out with a craft project.
- Great Communicator: Someone who is easy to talk to, knows how to build trust with youth, and maintains professional boundaries with partners and parents.
Must-Haves:
- Valid Standard First Aid & CPR Level C (or willingness to get it before starting).
- A transparent Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) upon hire.
Work Environment & Vibe This is an active, high-energy environment. No two days are the same—you might spend part of your day doing light paperwork, and the next shooting hoops, baking in the kitchen, or chatting with teens in the drop-in lounge.
