The Opportunity:
The Payroll Supervisor will oversee and manage the organization’s payroll functions and benefits administration.
This role also leads payroll projects and system upgrades, mentors junior payroll staff, and improves payroll processes over time.
A Day in the Life (What you will do here):
-
- Takes a hands-on role in processing payroll for a subset of legal entities, given the tight turnaround and high employee volume involved in each payroll cycle; balances direct processing with supervisory oversight of the broader team
- Processes and audits multi-provincial payroll (salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, deductions). Keeps HRIS records accurate for reporting and audits.
- Owns payroll compliance: year-end filings (T4, T4A, T2200, ROEs) and government remittances (Health Tax, WSIB, CPP) by province.
- Manages payroll records retention per policy. Processes off-cycle payments as needed. Removes terminated salaried employees from auto-pay promptly.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for payroll matters, resolving cases quickly with a focus on superior customer service.
- Works with Finance and Accounts Payable on GL reconciliations, new payroll code/GL mapping, and updates to employee banking and garnishment details.
- Leads,
mentors, and trains Junior Payroll Specialist.
- Reviews and approves final payroll before it goes to the Controller. Keeps supporting documents for audit. Acts as backup for the Payroll Specialist.
- Leads payroll system enhancements and special projects, partnering with IT, HR, and Finance stakeholders.
- Investigates payroll discrepancies and fixes them at the source. Is the escalation point for tough payroll, tax, and compliance issues, including CRA rulings and audits.
- Drives SOP standardization, automation, and continuous improvement in payroll. Upholds Sentrex's Mission, Vision, Values, and Brand.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager
What you need to ensure you are set up for success:
-
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, similar field, or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including mentoring or reviewing the work of other payroll staff, in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.
- PCP Certification is required. CPM Certification is strongly preferred, reflecting the seniority and scope of this role.
- Solid knowledge of multi-provincial payroll in Canada: preparation, balancing, internal controls, payroll taxes, and the full payroll cycle (banking, journal entries).
- Demonstrated experience leading payroll system implementations, upgrades, or process improvement/automation projects.
- Strong Excel and payroll software skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, system setup/testing). Power Query, macros, and Workday experience are assets.
