About Marecomms

Marecomms is a deep-tech ocean technology pioneer breaking long-standing signal processing and acoustic communication paradigms in subsea wireless environments. Built upon fundamental breakthroughs in underwater signal processing, high-efficiency sensor and hardware management, we develop world-leading acoustic modems, robust communication & networking solutions, and modular reference IP for commercial and defense applications globally.

Driven by scientific rigor and technological superiority, Marecomms is in a key strategic expansion phase—scaling our core capabilities to deploy our next-generation subsea stack and accelerate global operations.

Role Summary

As part of our engineering team expansion, we are seeking a Mid-Level Systems Engineer with robust, balanced expertise in mixed-signal PCB design, hardware bring-up, and embedded integration. In this role, you will bridge the gap between core algorithms-layer and production-ready hardware.

Your primary focus will be designing and documenting modular, component-based reference hardware architectures. Concurrently, you will maintain and harden our established functional hardware/firmware baseline to support turnkey deployments.

Key Responsibilities

· Hardware & Firmware Bring-Up: Perform hands-on board bring-up, hardware debugging, and signal validation using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.

· Platform Commercialization: Review, modify, and optimize existing C/C++ firmware codebases featuring concurrent multi-threaded execution, hardware-timed I/O, and inter-task message channels to complete platform validation and bring hardware products to commercial sign-off.

· Next-Gen Hardware Design: Lead schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout for future generations of internal hardware platforms, ensuring high reliability, signal integrity, and power efficiency.

· Reference Architecture Development:

Design and document simplified, component-based hardware and firmware reference designs to support technology licensing for external integrators.

· Linux Shell & Python Automation: Develop Bash and Python scripts for automated bench testing, system deployment, log analysis, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation, and data extraction in Linux environments.

· Operator Dashboards & Diagnostics: Build lightweight operator tools and interfaces (command-line or Python/HTML/JS web dashboards served over IP) for telemetry monitoring and system configuration.

· Signal Analysis & MATLAB Simulation: Work alongside senior engineers to analyze physical layer signal data, model acoustic algorithms, and validate DSP routines using MATLAB.

· Integration & Field Trial Support: Assist with mechanical enclosure integration and waterproof packaging. Help prepare, package, and deploy test gear and subsea enclosure assemblies for local dockside and ocean field trials across the Halifax area.

· Technical Documentation: Maintain clear, structured documentation for C firmware routines, MATLAB models, Python test suites, hardware procedures, and system build steps.

Position Requirements

Mandatory Criteria:

· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering (no exceptions).

· Experience: 2+ years of post-graduation commercial or specialized research experience spanning both PCB design and embedded C/C++ firmware.

· Work Authorization & Location:

Valid Canadian work and the ability to work full-time from our Halifax office starting on day one.

· Physical Capability: Ability to safely handle electronic lab gear and field testing equipment (up to 20 kg) during laboratory bench testing, dockside setups, and local vessel deployments.

Core Technical Skills:

· Firmware & Concurrency: Mastery of embedded C/C++ for real-time systems. Proven experience with multi-core/multi-threaded architectures, event-driven execution, hardware-assisted concurrency, inter-core channel/pipe communication, and deterministic timing control.

· Data Acquisition & AD/DA: Solid grasp of Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog (AD/DA) conversion principles, sampling rates, dynamic range, and noise isolation in mixed-signal circuits.

· Peripheral Protocols & Data Streams: Hands-on implementation of high-speed serial protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, I2S/SAI), DMA streaming, memory management, and ring buffers for continuous data acquisition.

· PCB Design & EDA: Proven track record in schematic capture and multi-layer mixed-signal PCB layout using modern EDA design software.

· Software Development Tools: Strong familiarity with Git version control, Linux OS environments, and shell scripting (Bash, Python).

· Lab Debugging: Expert bench-testing skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and physical hardware debug interfaces.

Desirable Assets (Nice-to-Have):

· Working knowledge of physical layer signal processing concepts and MATLAB simulation tools.

· Familiarity with lightweight web interfaces (HTML/JS) or IP-based command structures.

· Exposure to 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks/Fusion 360) and mechanical enclosure integration for marine environments.

Pay: $75,000.00-$100,000.00 per year

Benefits:

- On-site parking

Application question(s):
