The Role
The General Manager, Export Trade is a strategic business leadership role. You will set the direction for the company's Canadian pulse export business, build and lead the team that executes it, and own the P&L.; This is not a trading execution role — it is a general management position for someone who understands the commodity export business deeply enough to lead it: where to play, how to win, what team to build, and how to grow the business over time.
The ideal background is senior leadership in international commodity trade or food export — someone who has spent their career in these markets and understands the commercial mechanics, the buyer relationships, and the risk environment well enough to set strategy and hold a team accountable for results. Pulses experience is a significant asset. Experience in grains, oilseeds, or any agricultural commodity with international export exposure is a strong fit.
Key Responsibilities
Business Strategy
Define the export trade strategy: which commodities to prioritize, which destination markets to build presence in, and how to position the company as a preferred Canadian supplier
Translate commodity market intelligence — crop conditions, price trends, buyer demand signals — into a clear commercial direction for the business
Identify growth opportunities in current markets and buyer segments and develop plans to pursue them
Set annual volume, margin, and market development targets and manage the business to deliver against them
Team Leadership
Build, lead, and develop the export trade team: sales, and operations professionals based in Canada
Set clear performance standards and create a culture of commercial accountability and continuous improvement
Coach and develop team members, building capability in commodity market knowledge, buyer relationship management, and trade execution
Make resourcing and organizational decisions as the business grows
Commercial Oversight
Maintain senior-level relationships with key buyers in international destination markets, supporting the team where the relationship warrants GM-level engagement
Oversee pricing strategy and ensure the team is managing commodity price risk, FX exposure, and working capital in line with the company's risk appetite
Ensure quality standards are set, communicated, and upheld across the procurement-to-delivery cycle
Financial Performance
Own the export trade P&L; and report business performance to the CEO with clarity on volume, margin, and market position
Set the financial framework for how trades are structured, financed, and risk-managed
Ensure working capital is managed efficiently and trade finance is used appropriately across the team's activity
What We Are Looking For
Required
10 or more years in international commodity trade, food export, or agri-commodity business — with progression to a leadership role
Strong understanding of commodity market mechanics: price discovery, basis, risk management, and how margins are made and lost in commodity export
Experience owning or directly overseeing a trading book or export business P&L;
Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold a commercial team accountable
Familiarity with international trade mechanics — documentary trade, freight, inspection, and export compliance — at a sufficient level to lead and oversee a team executing these activities
Comfort operating in international markets with regular travel to buyer destinations
University degree in business, agriculture, economics, or a related field
