Assistant Professor in Bioengineering (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Bioengineering within the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2027.

McGill University is among the top research-intensive academic institutions in Canada and worldwide, attracting over one-half billion dollars in competitive research funding each year. The successful candidate will play a leading role in contributing to McGill’s international reputation of excellence in research, teaching and service.

We seek outstanding researchers in synthetic biology and biomanufacturing. The ideal candidate will develop a collaborative research program that integrates quantitative biology, gene editing, and/or engineered living systems to develop innovative approaches for nucleic acid and/or protein design and engineering, biological synthesis, metabolic engineering, tissue engineering, mRNA/next-generation therapeutics, biologics manufacturing, or related applications. Candidates with programs that seek to employ synthetic biology principles related to sustainability, including sustainable biomanufacturing, carbon capture valorization, bioremediation solutions, and bio-inspired materials are also encouraged to apply.

The candidate will join a vibrant network of researchers in the Bioengineering Department focused on cancer point-of-care diagnostics, mechanobiology, synthetic and systems biology, and biomanufacturing, as well as university-wide team-oriented networks including the DNA to RNA Initiative (D2R), Centre for Structural Biology (CRBS),

McGill Institute for Advanced Materials (MIAM), and the Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity (MI4).

The Department of Bioengineering is committed to excellence in teaching in its undergraduate and graduate programs including B.Eng. in Bioengineering, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biological and Biomedical Engineering, and M.Eng. (non-thesis) in Biomanufacturing. The department values the service contributions of its Faculty members to the University, the profession, and society at large.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in any area of life sciences or engineering, with preference for a first degree in engineering.

Evidence of outstanding research achievements and the potential to develop an externally-funded research program are indispensable. Preferred qualifications include dedication to an environment that supports diversity of population and perspectives; as our students come from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds, we invite candidates to address in their application their ability to teach, supervise, and mentor in this context.

Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to the mission of the University, through outstanding activities in the areas of research, teaching, and service.

Membership or eligibility for membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required.

Application process and required documents

Applications will be reviewed starting November 30, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
