Think in systems. Build with people. Deliver what works.

About SysEne (sis-een): SysEne brings together systems engineering and a systems approach to project management. We work for owners and operators of public transit and other complex infrastructure. We help plan, build, and deliver complex technology systems by connecting technology, processes, and people across the full life cycle, and we stay with the work until it is running. We work on long-term programs, not one-off jobs, and we get things done.

We are a small, high-standards team, and we invest heavily in the people who join us.

The opportunity

You are an engineer with real depth in software, working across systems. You will bring software and data depth to our transit technology programs, where software runs real hardware and devices, not web applications. The work combines systems engineering, business analysis, and software engineering: requirements, integration and interfaces, reviewing vendor work, building where it makes sense, and managing software releases into operation.

The program is part of our long-term work for a regional transit network. It covers operations and customer technology: telecom networks, voice and data radio, control and monitoring systems, and real-time passenger information across buses, trains, and stations. It is technically demanding work that owners and communities depend on.

What you will do

- Work out software and data requirements, use cases, and acceptance tests with operations and engineering staff.
- Review and shape software and data architecture: integration, interfaces, APIs, data pipelines, prediction and back-end systems, and health monitoring.
- Review vendor designs and test results, and think through how things can fail.
- Build prototypes, tools, and integrations, using AI-assisted development where it fits.
- Work with vendors and client IT to get software into service: plan each release, keep test and live systems in step, track bugs until they are fixed,

and plan the switch to each new version.
- Explain software risk plainly to operations staff and managers.

What you bring

- Integrity, and the habit of thinking things through.
- Drive and ownership. You push things across the line and find a way forward when the answer isn't obvious.
- You listen. Requirements live in people, not just documents. You ask good questions, and you listen past what people ask for to understand the actual need behind the request.
- You bring people along. You get teams to decisions, and you understand that people see things differently and that interests compete.
- You like to learn. You enjoy complex problems that cross disciplines. You are comfortable with uncertainty, you go into the details when the risk calls for it, and you bounce back from setbacks.
- About 2 to 6 years building and delivering software-intensive systems, with some track record across a project life cycle.
- Experience with real-time or embedded systems, or software running hardware and devices.
- Comfortable on large systems, not just one subsystem.
- A degree in software, computer, or electrical engineering, computer science, or similar.

The experience range is a guide. Talent and how you think matter more than years of experience, and applicants outside the range are welcome.

Helpful

- Transportation, operational technology, telecom, or radio systems.
- Product development experience.
- GTFS-RT, automatic train control, CAD/AVL, prediction engines, radio or telecom data, or IoT.
- Systems engineering practice: INCOSE, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, and requirements traceability.

- Proven use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code to build working applications, with habits for checking the result: tests, reviews, and running the real thing.
- EGBC P.Eng. or EIT. On engineering work, clients may ask for proof of registration. PMP is a plus.

What sets you apart

- You have shipped software that runs something real, and you can explain what broke and how you fixed it.
- You think about how things will fail before they do.
- You solve problems that are technical, business, and political at once.
- You talk as easily with operators and vendors as with other engineers.

What we offer

- Real systems that people use every day.
- Senior practitioners who take mentorship seriously, and a named Development Owner for your long-term growth.
- Pairing on real work, and forums where we share what we learn.
- A salary of $100,000 to $140,000 per year.
- Health, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage, paid vacation, professional development, and flexible hybrid work in Vancouver.

How to apply

Send your resume and a cover letter of no more than one page. In it, tell us about two things:

- Something you built, delivered, or improved: a system, a tool, or a process. Briefly, what the challenge was, your part in it, what you learned or changed along the way, and how you checked that it worked. Student, capstone, and side projects count.
- How you use AI or other tools in your work, and how you check what they give you. If you haven't used AI much yet, tell us how you would start.

If you are shortlisted, you will present on a realistic case and talk through a live scenario.

SysEne is an equal prospect employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals.
