Think in systems. Build with people. Deliver what works.
About SysEne (sis-een)
SysEne brings together systems engineering and a systems approach to project management. We work for owners and operators of public transit and other complex infrastructure. We help plan, build, and deliver complex technology systems by connecting technology, processes, and people across the full life cycle, and we stay with the work until it is running. We work on long-term programs, not one-off jobs, and we get things done.
We are a small, high-standards team, and we invest heavily in the people who join us.
The chance
You will be our engineer in the field on a large transit technology program. You will run proofs of concept and pilots at client sites, some lasting several months, set up test environments, organize the field work, and work side by side with the operator's staff. You bring what you learn from operators and maintainers back to the project team and into the design. Senior engineers back you up, and a named Development Owner supports your growth. Over time you take on more as your judgment and experience develop.
The program is part of our long-term work for a regional transit network. It covers operations and customer technology: telecom networks, voice and data radio, control and monitoring systems, and real-time passenger information across buses, trains, and stations. It is technically demanding work that owners and communities depend on.
What you will do
- Plan and run proofs of concept and pilots: daily objectives, test windows, equipment, access, and results.
- Set up and run test environments with hardware, networks, control systems, and software.
- Work on site with operations and maintenance staff to find gaps and understand what they actually need.
- Record results, issues, and lessons, and turn them into requirements and design changes.
- Support integration and testing, and help with verification and acceptance.
- Build scripts, models, and small tools to answer engineering questions, using AI where it helps.
What you bring
- Integrity, and the habit of thinking things through.
- Drive and ownership.
You push things across the line and find a way forward when the answer isn't obvious.
- You listen. Requirements live in people, not just documents. You ask good questions, and you listen past what people ask for to understand the actual need behind the request.
- You bring people along. You get teams to decisions, and you understand that people see things differently and that interests compete.
- You like to learn. You enjoy complex problems that cross disciplines. You are comfortable with uncertainty, you go into the details when the risk calls for it, and you bounce back from setbacks.
- 0 to 5 years of experience. New grads with hands-on build, test, co-op, or field experience are welcome.
- A degree in systems, electrical, computer, mechanical, or software engineering, or similar.
- EGBC EIT eligibility, or working toward it.
- Hands-on experience: you have built, tested, and improved real hardware or systems.
- Comfortable working on site, dealing with what the field throws at you, and changing course when something doesn't work.
- Clear writing and good working relationships with people in the field.
The experience range is a guide. Talent and how you think matter more than years of experience, and applicants outside the range are welcome.
Helpful
- Telecom, radio, networking, real-time information, or operational technology systems.
- Testing and commissioning, field applications, or development engineering experience.
- Systems engineering practice: INCOSE, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, and requirements or MBSE tools.
- Programming in Python or similar.
- Building small applications with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, for example to turn engineering data into models, views, or reports.
- Project management or people leadership skills.
- Project or business planning experience, including co-op or capstone work.
- Flexibility to work days or nights when operational work calls for it.
What sets you apart
- You have built something real, even at a student scale, taken it into the lab or the field, and made it work. You can describe what was hard and what you learned.
- You see that problems are often technical, business, and political at once, and you approach the people side with curiosity rather than frustration.
- You are organized, thorough, and take quality seriously, including in the field.
- You seek feedback, keep learning, and want to grow your craft.
- You use AI on real work and know how to check the result.
What we offer
- Real systems that people use every day.
- Senior practitioners who take mentorship seriously, and a named Development Owner for your long-term growth.
- Pairing on real work, and forums where we share what we learn.
- A salary of $80,000 to $115,000 per year.
- Health, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage, paid vacation, professional development, and adaptable hybrid work in Vancouver.
How to apply
Send your resume and a cover letter of no more than one page. In it, tell us about two things:
1. Something you built, delivered, or improved: a system, a tool, or a process. Briefly, what the challenge was, your part in it, what you learned or changed along the way, and how you checked that it worked. Student, capstone, and side projects count.
2. How you use AI or other tools in your work, and how you check what they give you. If you haven't used AI much yet, tell us how you would start.
If you are shortlisted, you will present on a realistic case and talk through a live scenario.
