Thermex Engineered Systems
Abbotsford
Engineering Technologist (Product Development, Controls and Software)
Thermex Engineered Systems, Abbotsford BC
We design and build industrial heating equipment in Abbotsford: hydronic and waterline heaters, tank heating systems, heat probes, and the controls that run them.
We want a designer who builds. On each new build you work with our Operations and Technology Manager: you design a part or a product together, build the first one, work out how the shop will put it together, and show the team how. Then you refine it from what the build, the testing and the people building it tell you. Repeatable, efficient assembly, balanced with function.
We need someone who can take on large portions of a project and work through them, with support when it's needed. Expect a mix: one week is a new design on the bench, the next is a PLC change, a test fixture, or a fix to our in-house production software.
What you'll work on
- Designing recent products with our Operations and Technology Manager, and improving existing ones, in CAD, with the build in mind from the start.
- Building prototypes and first units.
- Working out the assembly process, writing it down, and teaching it to the people who will build it.
- Refining designs with the shop: what was hard to build, what failed in test, what the assemblers suggest.
- PLC programs and control systems for our heaters.
- Test rigs, fixtures and the electronics in our control boxes.
- Jumping in on high-priority assembly and testing jobs.
- Our in-house production and inventory software, and IT for a small office and shop.
What we're looking for
- You design in CAD (Fusion 360 or similar) and build what you design.
- Strength in electronics and controls, or in software. Both is better.
- You work well with the people on the floor: you explain, you listen, and you change the design when they are right.
- You already use AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or similar) in your everyday work, and can show us something you got done with them.
- You can point to something you took from unclear to finished on your own.
- Willing to pitch in on admin when it needs doing.
Bonus, not required
- PLC programming (Horner or other).
- Experience designing for manufacturing or assembly.
- Enough knowledge of fabrication and welding to design for them, plan the work and judge the result.
- An engineering technologist diploma or engineering degree.
