Math Doctor
Toronto
Teach one student at a time, get paid well for it, and watch a score move.
Math Doctor is a Midtown Toronto 1-on-1 tutoring company, and we’re adding test-prep tutors for the next 8 months. If you’ve written one (or more) of these tests before and enjoy explaining how to beat it, this is a steady, well-paid way to put that to work. Note: The ideal candidate has a past track record of helping students with the Verbal section of these tests, as we don't tutor just the match section.
What you get
- Clear, strong pay: $50–$55 per hour in person and $40–$45 per hour online. You know your rate before you apply.
- Predictable hours: 5 to 8 hours a week for 8 months, so it fits around classes or another job.
- Strictly 1-on-1: no classrooms and no groups.
- Students come to you: we bring you students, so your hours go to teaching, not marketing.
- A transparent starting point for every student: each one begins with a full diagnostic practice test, so from the first session, you know which question types are costing points.
- A founder-led team that cares about teaching quality.
- A visible result: a higher score, a school admission, a university or MBA acceptance.
What you’ll do
- Run weekly 1-on-1 sessions, in-home or live online, for students preparing for the SSAT (Grades 5 to 9), SAT or ACT (Grades 10 to 12), GRE (graduate applicants) or GMAT (MBA applicants).
- Read diagnostic and timed-practice results, find the question types costing the most points, and build a plan around them.
- Teach both the content and the strategy, then assign focused practice between sessions.
- Run timed practice re-tests to track progress, and adjust the plan as scores move.
- Give students and parents short, clear progress updates.
What we’re looking for
- You have written at least one of the SSAT,
SAT, ACT, GMAT or GRE within the past 5 years.
- You’re confident with the content you’ll teach and the current test formats, such as the Digital SAT and the GMAT Focus Edition, or you’re ready to master them before your first session.
- You have some weekday availability. Most of our demand will be from 4:30 to 7:30pm.
- Preference goes to candidates who live in midtown Toronto and have unrestricted access to a vehicle.
Skills that make a great test-prep tutor
- Time management: you can teach pacing, including budgeting minutes per question, deciding when to skip and return, and building stamina for a full test. You also run timed drills honestly and manage your own schedule, arriving on time and prepared.
- Test-taking strategies: process of elimination, educated guessing, triaging hard questions, plugging in answer choices, and using the testing tools well.
- Diagnosing: you spot patterns in a student’s mistakes, so you fix the cause instead of re-teaching everything.
- Clear explanations: you can explain the same idea two or three different ways.
- Coaching: you build confidence, calm test anxiety and keep teens accountable.
- Professionalism: you’re reliable, communicate well with parents and treat students’ time and trust seriously.
An asset: previous tutoring, teaching or TA experience, and strong scores on your own test.
