Wilson Plumbing Service

Mount Forest

Wilson Plumbing Service is a growing mechanical contracting company specializing in new construction across Ontario. Our projects range from commercial and industrial developments to hotels, multi-residential buildings, and large-scale high-rise construction.

We currently have approximately 70 mechanical tradespeople working across multiple projects, supported by a lean office team consisting of project management, estimating, purchasing, BIM coordination, fabrication, and administration.

We've grown significantly over the past several years, and we're looking for an experienced Director of Operations to help us manage that growth and take our operations to the next level.

We're not looking for someone to simply oversee what's happening today. We need someone who can plan what's happening next month, six months from now, and beyond.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a hands-on Director of Operations who can take ownership of our day-to-day operations, bring structure to our scheduling and planning, and ensure our field and office teams are working together efficiently.

This position will work directly with ownership and serve as a key link between our project managers, foremen, purchasing department, and field crews.

Our biggest priority is forward planning. With multiple large projects running simultaneously, we need someone who can look ahead, understand upcoming manpower requirements, identify potential conflicts, and ensure the right people, materials, and resources are available when needed.

Too much of our time is currently spent reacting to problems that could have been identified weeks or months earlier. We're looking for someone who can change that.

The right candidate will have the experience and confidence to make decisions, hold people accountable, improve our internal processes, and take ownership of operational performance without requiring constant direction.

Key Responsibilities

Project Scheduling & Manpower Planning

This will be one of the most important aspects of the position.

- Develop and maintain a company-wide master construction schedule covering all active and upcoming projects.
- Forecast manpower requirements weeks and months in advance, accounting for project milestones, workload changes, and upcoming project starts.
- Coordinate the allocation of approximately 70 field employees across multiple construction sites.
- Work closely with project managers and foremen to develop realistic short-term and long-term labour plans.
- Identify scheduling conflicts, labour shortages, and potential project delays before they impact operations.
- Monitor project progress against schedules and make adjustments to keep projects moving.
- Lead regular scheduling and manpower meetings with the project management team.
- Assist with planning future hiring requirements based on projected workloads.

Field Operations & Leadership

- Provide day-to-day operational leadership to our field teams and foremen.
- Establish explicit expectations for productivity, communication, scheduling, and accountability.
- Maintain regular communication with foremen to understand jobsite progress, challenges, and upcoming requirements.
- Work with foremen to improve crew efficiency, coordination, and overall project execution.
- Help develop stronger field leadership through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
- Address operational issues proactively rather than allowing them to escalate to ownership.

- Ensure consistent communication between the office and field.

Project Oversight & Financial Performance

- Work alongside project managers to ensure projects are progressing according to schedule, budget, and contractual requirements.
- Review labour performance, productivity, and project cost reports to identify areas requiring attention.
- Help establish realistic project budgets and labour forecasts during project startup.
- Monitor project profitability and work with the team to address cost overruns.
- Ensure project managers are staying ahead of change orders, RFIs, submittals, progress billing, and other project requirements.
- Support project cash-flow planning by ensuring schedules, procurement commitments, and billing milestones are properly coordinated.
- Provide ownership with clear, accurate reporting on project performance and operational risks.

Purchasing, Procurement & Coordination

- Work closely with our purchasing department to ensure material and equipment requirements are identified well in advance.
- Coordinate procurement schedules with project milestones and installation requirements.
- Identify long-lead equipment and material risks early enough to prevent project delays.
- Ensure project managers, purchasing, BIM coordination, fabrication, and field teams are working from a consistent plan.
- Help improve coordination between our fabrication shop and active construction projects to maximize opportunities for prefabrication and labour savings.
- Ensure upcoming work is properly planned before crews arrive on site.

Operational Systems & Process Improvement

- Review our current operational processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, communication, and accountability.
- Develop practical systems for project scheduling, manpower forecasting, progress reporting, and operational tracking.
- Establish consistent procedures across projects without creating unnecessary administrative work.
- Implement regular reporting that provides ownership with a clear understanding of company-wide operations.
- Improve the flow of information between estimating, project management, purchasing, fabrication, and field operations.
- Help build an operational structure that can support continued growth without constantly increasing overhead.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity through better planning, technology, prefabrication, and resource management.

Leadership & Strategic Planning

- Work directly with ownership to establish operational priorities and execute company objectives.
- Take responsibility for day-to-day operational decisions and follow through on commitments.
- Identify staffing, equipment, and resource requirements as the company continues to grow.
- Assist with recruitment, employee development, and succession planning for key field leadership positions.
- Build a culture of accountability, organization, and proactive problem-solving.
- Help shift the company's operations from reactive management to structured, forward-looking planning.

Qualifications & Experience We're looking for someone who has already managed complex construction operations and understands what it takes to keep multiple projects moving at the same time.

Required:

- 5–10+ years of experience in construction operations, project management, or a similar senior leadership role.
- Proven experience managing multiple construction projects and coordinating large field teams.
- Strong understanding of construction scheduling, manpower planning, and resource allocation.
- Experience leading project managers, superintendents, foremen, or other operational staff.
- Ability to interpret construction schedules, budgets, cost reports, and project performance information.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Confidence making independent decisions and holding team members accountable.
- Proficiency with construction scheduling software, Microsoft Excel, and other project management tools.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to project sites as required.

Preferred:

- Background in mechanical contracting, including plumbing, HVAC, or sheet metal.
- Experience overseeing 50+ tradespeople across multiple active construction sites.
- Experience with mid-rise, high-rise, commercial, or industrial construction.
- Familiarity with BIM coordination, prefabrication, and construction procurement.
- Experience developing operational systems and improving processes within a growing construction company.

A mechanical background would be an asset, but we're equally interested in experienced construction leaders from other trades who have a strong understanding of scheduling, field operations, and project delivery. Who We're Looking For The ideal candidate is someone who naturally thinks several steps ahead.

You're organized, decisive, and comfortable managing a busy construction operation where priorities can change quickly. You understand that good operations management isn't about constantly putting out fires — it's about building the systems and communication needed to prevent them.

You're comfortable walking a jobsite with a foreman in the morning, reviewing manpower requirements with project managers in the afternoon, and developing a six-month operational plan with ownership.

You don't need to be told what needs attention. You recognize problems, develop solutions, and follow through.

Most importantly, you take ownership of results and understand that the success of the company depends on how well the office and field work together.

What We Offer

- Competitive salary of $100,000–$150,000 annually, depending on experience.
- Senior leadership position with significant responsibility and decision-making authority.
- Opportunity to work directly with ownership and influence the future direction of the company.
- Established company with a strong project portfolio and continued growth opportunities.
- Diverse and challenging construction projects throughout Ontario.
- Support from an experienced team of project managers, estimators, purchasers, BIM coordinators, and field leaders.
- Opportunity to build and improve operational systems rather than simply maintain existing processes.
- Long-term career opportunity with a growing mechanical contractor.

Pay: $100,000.00-$150,000.00 per year
