About Marecomms
Marecomms is a deep-tech ocean technology pioneer breaking long-standing signal processing and acoustic communication paradigms in subsea wireless environments. Built upon fundamental breakthroughs in underwater signal processing, high-efficiency sensor and hardware management, we develop world-leading acoustic modems, robust communication & networking solutions, and modular reference IP for commercial and defense applications globally.
Driven by scientific rigor and technological superiority, Marecomms is in a key strategic expansion phase—scaling our core firmware, DSP, and hardware engineering teams to deploy our next-generation subsea stack and accelerate global licensing operations.
Role Summary
We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented Embedded Systems Engineering Intern / Co-op to join our engineering team at our Halifax facility. In this hands-on role, you will work directly alongside senior engineers, assisting with board bring-up, hardware bench testing, test automation, and firmware validation for our subsea communication platforms.
This position is designed for a high-intent student or recent graduate with a passion for real-time embedded systems, low-level C/C++ programming, and hardware-software integration. You will gain direct exposure to cutting-edge physical-layer hardware, automated testing pipelines, and subsea ocean trial deployments.
Key Responsibilities
· Hardware Bring-Up & Lab Testing: Assist senior engineers with hands-on board bring-up, hardware debugging, and signal validation using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and power supplies.
· Firmware Testing & Validation: Write, test,
and debug low-level embedded C/C++ firmware modules, driver routines, and peripheral interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, ADC/DAC) under the guidance of lead engineers.
· Automation & Scripting: Develop Python and Bash scripts to automate bench testing, log analysis, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation, and sensor data extraction in Linux environments.
· Diagnostic Tools & Interfaces: Help build lightweight command-line tools or basic operator web dashboards (Python/HTML/JS over IP) for internal hardware diagnostics and telemetry monitoring.
· PCB & Schematic Support: Review PCB schematics and layouts alongside senior designers, assist with component selection, and perform fine-pitch soldering, rework, and cable harness assembly.
· Subsea Enclosure & Field Support: Assist with mechanical enclosure assembly, waterproof sealing, and test gear preparation. Participate in local dockside setups and ocean field trial deployments across the Halifax area.
· Documentation: Maintain transparent, structured documentation for test procedures, firmware routines, hardware bring-up logs, and system build steps.
Position Requirements
· Mandatory Criteria:
· Education: Graduating or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Electrical,
Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent).
· Work Authorization & Location: Valid Canadian work authorization and the ability to work full-time on-site at our Halifax, NS engineering facility.
· Lab Rigor: Hands-on experience using standard electronic lab gear (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, soldering stations).
· Physical Capability: Ability to safely handle electronic lab gear and field testing equipment (up to 20 kg) during laboratory bench setups, dockside testing, and local vessel deployments.
Core Technical Skills:
· Embedded C/C++: Solid foundational knowledge of C/C++ for microcontrollers, bare-metal programming, or basic RTOS task concepts.
· Peripherals & Protocols: Understanding of standard serial protocols (SPI, I2C, UART) and basic hardware interrupt concepts.
· Scripting & Linux: Practical experience with Python and Git version control in Linux environments.
· Hardware Fundamentals: Ability to read schematics, understand analog/digital circuit basics, and trace signals on a PCB.
Desirable Assets (Nice-to-Have):
· Exposure to EDA software for schematic capture or PCB layout (e.g., Altium Designer, KiCad).
· Basic familiarity with digital signal processing (DSP) concepts or MATLAB/Octave.
· Hands-on hobbyist or student team projects involving microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, ARM Cortex-M, or FPGAs).
· Exposure to 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360) or basic mechanical assembly.
Pay: $58,400.00-$75,000.00 per year
