About CarbonRun
CarbonRun is a fast-growing, venture-backed climate technology company developing river alkalinity enhancement (RAE) projects that improve river health while generating high-integrity, durable carbon dioxide removal.
We partner with communities, utilities, conservation groups, and governments to restore ecosystems and deliver measurable climate impact. CarbonRun has projects both currently operating and in development, alongside a pipeline of projects across Canada and globally, supported by committed offtakes and capital partners to enable execution and growth.
About the Role
We are seeking a talented Engineering Assistant Co-op student to join our growing technical team and contribute to the design and scale-up of the technology that restores river ecosystems and helps fight climate change by permanently sequestering carbon dioxide.
Reporting to and working closely with CarbonRun’s Project Engineer, the successful candidate will gain exposure to all aspects of our technology and operations, playing an important role within the small team responsible for designing, optimizing, and scaling up our river restoration systems. The work spans the full arc of an engineering project, from design development and analysis through equipment selection, construction support, and verification in the field. During the term the candidate will become the owner of several small projects that directly contribute to our technical roadmap, supported by the mentorship of experienced engineers and world-class scientists.
This is a fixed-term student position running from January to April, 2027 (approximately 14 weeks).
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design
- Support the Project Engineer in managing the detailed engineering design of CarbonRun’s commercial system, including tracking deliverables, decisions, and open design questions
- Review incoming design deliverables such as process flow diagrams, P&IDs;, equipment datasheets, and specifications, and consolidate CarbonRun’s comments for the Project Engineer
- Attend design review and progress meetings with engineering firms, capture decisions and action items,
and follow up to close them out
- Support the Project Engineer with research and development projects that span internal departments
Engineering Analysis and Equipment Selection
- Conduct and/or review engineering calculations, such as mass and energy balances, dosing rates, fluid mechanics, storage sizing, and material handling throughput
- Research equipment options and transferable technologies from water treatment, aquaculture, bulk solids handling, and chemical processing, and prepare comparisons that cover technical fit, capital cost, and operating cost
- Help prepare requests for quotation, track vendor responses, and summarize the technical differences between shortlisted options
Field and Commissioning Support
- Provide support to the Field Team on site visits while following CarbonRun’s safety protocols and acting as a respectful ambassador in the rural communities we work in
- Support commissioning, troubleshooting, performance, and maintenance monitoring of CarbonRun’s existing systems
- Independently investigate technical issues that come up in the field or in the design, and recommend a course of action to the Project Engineer
Documentation and Reporting
- Prepare technical memos, drawing markups, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders at all levels
- Maintain the engineering document register and revision control for design deliverables shared with engineering firms and other external parties
- Contribute to scientific, process engineering, and technical project management tasks
Qualifications
Required
- Enrolled in an accredited undergraduate engineering program, ideally chemical, civil, environmental, or mechanical, and returning to studies after the work term
- Strong academic performance and a solid grasp of the fundamentals in water quality/water treatment, fluid mechanics, and process or civil design
- An understanding of the climate challenges facing the planet and a desire to make an impact
- Proficiency in engineering documents such as process flow diagrams, P&IDs; and equipment specifications
- Ability to work independently and advocate for your own ideas and insights
- A fast learner and demonstrated problem-solver with excellent communication skills
- Comfortable interacting with external partners, including consulting engineers, subcontractors, and vendors
- Willingness to travel within Nova Scotia to visit field sites. The candidate is not responsible for transportation to field sites and would travel with other team members
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities in a start-up business workplace
Valued Attributes
- Previous co-op or work experience in water treatment, process engineering, hydrology, geoscience, or industrial equipment design
- Exposure to CAD or process simulation tools, for example AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SolidWorks, or equivalent
- Experience working alongside external consultants, contractors, or equipment vendors
- Field, construction, or plant experience, and comfortable working in a hands-on environment
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
