Grademan with carpentry abilities
Kamea Contracting Ltd. | Metro Vancouver | Full-time, year-round
Wage: $34 – $46 per hour, based on experience and verified skills
About the role
This is a hybrid role for a grade checker who can also build forms. You will set and verify elevations for site grading, pipe and road works. You will then form the concrete that ties it together:
- Manhole and catch basin collars
- Curbs and sidewalks
- Headwalls and small pads
One person who can do both keeps our crews moving and cuts rework, and we pay for that combination.
What you will do
Grade checking
- Establish and check elevations, slopes and alignment using a rotating laser
- Calculate HI, rod readings, cuts/fills and offsets from benchmarks, grade sheets and profiles
- Direct operators to subgrade, base and finish grade, communicating clearly by hand signals
- Set and maintain stakes, hubs, offsets and stringlines as work progresses
- Stay out of the swing radius and blind spots, and keep eye contact with operators when working near equipment
Formwork
- Build, set, brace and strip formwork for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, headwalls, manhole and catch basin collars and small slabs
- Prepare subgrade and granular base to spec
- Check form elevations and alignment before every pour
Documentation
- Record as-built information and keep accurate field notes
- Take part in daily tailgate meetings and hazard assessments, and report hazards and near misses
What you bring
- 2+ years as a grademan or grade checker on civil or road projects
- 1+ year of formwork or concrete carpentry experience (civil or commercial)
- Strong field math: slope %, grade, cut/fill and elevation calculations
- Ability to read civil drawings, plan and profile sheets,
and MMCD details
- An understanding of trench and excavation hazards (OHSR Part 20), including never entering an unprotected excavation
- Your own carpentry hand tools (Kamea supplies the survey equipment)
Safety tickets
- CSTS 2020 or equivalent
- WHMIS 201
- Basic First Aid (asset)
Robust assets (not required)
- Red Seal Carpenter, or an apprenticeship in progress
- Traffic Control Person (TCP) ticket
- Ground Disturbance Level 2
Our safety commitment to you At Kamea, you have the right and the duty to stop any work you believe is unsafe, and no one will be penalized for doing so. Before your first shift, you will receive a full site and company orientation.
