Position Summary:

The Unit Leader is a frontline senior staff member responsible for the day-to-day leadership of an assigned camper unit. The primary focus of this role is to be present with campers and staff in cabins, at meals, during transitions, and throughout the camp day—providing real-time coaching, support, problem-solving, and oversight.

Unit Leaders supervise and mentor Wranglers / Inclusion Support Specialist (Wranglers), help ensure camper needs are understood and consistently supported, and foster a safe, inclusive, positive, and well-organized cabin environment. This role is intentionally designed to be highly visible and hands-on rather than primarily administrative.

Unit Leaders retain responsibility for essential unit-level administration that requires their direct knowledge of campers and staff, including cabin assignments (cabinizing) in CampBrain, staff evaluations, and oversight of required incident and follow-up documentation. Routine administrative tasks and document preparation will be supported by the Camp Administration Team wherever appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Frontline Camper & Cabin Leadership

- Maintain a consistent and visible presence with assigned cabins throughout the camp day, including cabin routines, meals, transitions, activities, evening programs, and other key parts of the camper experience.
- Know the campers within the assigned unit, including individual support needs, routines, behavioural considerations, accessibility requirements, and relevant care information.
- Support Wranglers and Team Leads in responding to camper needs using appropriate inclusion, behaviour-support, communication, and de-escalation strategies.
- Monitor camper well-being, group dynamics, participation, and overall cabin functioning, addressing concerns promptly and escalating as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with Nursing, the Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and other senior staff when camper needs require additional support.
- Assist directly with camper care, transitions, group supervision, and programming when additional frontline support is required.
- Support crisis management, first aid, behavioural intervention, and emergency response in accordance with training and Zajac Ranch procedures.

2. Staff Supervision, Coaching & Support

- Provide direct supervision, mentorship, guidance, and day-to-day support to assigned Wranglers / Inclusion Support Specialist (Wranglers).
- Conduct regular check-ins with staff and provide timely, practical coaching while observing staff working directly with campers.
- Help staff problem-solve challenges related to camper care, cabin dynamics, communication, teamwork,

and workload.
- Ensure staff understand expectations, policies, schedules, camper support plans, and their responsibilities within the unit.
- Provide break coverage or step into frontline support when necessary to maintain appropriate camper supervision and staff wellness.
- Complete mid-summer and end-of-season performance evaluations for assigned staff and participate in performance-management or disciplinary processes as required.
- Model professionalism, compassion, accountability, teamwork, and a positive camp culture.

3. Cabin Assignments & Essential Administration

- Lead cabin assignments (cabinizing) in CampBrain for each camp session, using knowledge of camper needs, staffing strengths, ratios, relationships, and other relevant considerations.
- Review cabin and staffing assignments with the Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director and make adjustments as needed before and during each session.
- Provide the Camp Administration Team with accurate unit information, changes, and updates required for administrative records, schedules, lists, and document preparation.
- Review unit-specific camper information and prepared materials for accuracy and ensure staff receive the information they need before campers arrive.
- Ensure required incident reports, follow-up reports, night-care documentation, and other unit records are completed accurately and in a timely manner by the appropriate staff.
- Complete staff evaluations and other leadership documentation that requires direct supervisory knowledge.
- Focus administrative time on responsibilities that require Unit Leader judgment or camper/staff knowledge, while utilizing available administrative support for routine clerical tasks.

4. Camp Operations & Collaboration

- Attend senior staff meetings and communicate relevant unit updates, camper concerns, staffing needs, and emerging issues.
- Take an active frontline role in camper arrival and departure, helping cabins settle in and ensuring staff are prepared for each session.
- Collaborate closely with the Program Coordinator to support successful activity participation, transitions, adaptations, and communication between cabin and program staff.
- Collaborate with the CIT/LIT Coordinator when CITs or LITs are supporting assigned units to ensure appropriate learning opportunities and clear expectations.
- Report maintenance, facility, safety, or operational concerns promptly to the appropriate member of the senior team.
- Participate in senior leadership emergency or on-call responsibilities as scheduled.
- Assist with other camp operations and duties as assigned, with priority given to camper care and staff support.

Off-Season Rentals, as Applicable

- Support rental group operations, including activity set-up, facilitation, program support, and clean-up.
- Provide outdoor education and recreational programming for visiting groups within the scope of training and certification. Help ensure a protected, organized, and positive guest experience.

Shared Leadership & Camp-Wide Support

- Senior staff share collective responsibility for the safety, care, experience, and smooth operation of camp. When camper needs, staffing levels, staff breaks,

ratios, emergencies, or operational demands require additional support, senior staff are expected to step in and assist.
- This may include direct camper supervision, supporting another dorm or unit, staff break coverage, assisting in program areas, supporting meals and transitions, helping with arrivals/departures, or temporarily supporting responsibilities that normally sit within another senior role.
- Senior staff may be required to step directly into staff-to-camper ratio or provide frontline coverage whenever needed to maintain safe supervision and support the camper experience.
- Leadership at Zajac Ranch is hands-on and service-oriented. Seniority or job title does not exempt a staff member from frontline responsibilities when support is needed; strong leaders model teamwork by working alongside the people they supervise.
- A “that’s not my job” approach is not compatible with the camp environment. Candidates for senior roles must be willing to adapt, roll up their sleeves, and support the broader team wherever reasonably required and within their training and competence.
- Decisions about where support is needed will always be guided by camper safety, required ratios, staff well-being, and our shared goal of creating a safe, meaningful, and magical camp experience for campers.

Qualifications & Experience:

- Minimum two years of post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Education, Child & Youth Care, Social Work, Behavioural Science, Recreation, Pre-Health, or related) is considered an asset.
- Previous camp experience and experience supervising, coaching, or mentoring staff in a youth, recreation, or residential setting.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work directly alongside staff and campers in a busy residential camp environment.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Experience supporting children or youth with medical conditions, disabilities, neurodivergence, or behavioural support needs is considered an asset.
- Comfort using basic administrative systems; experience with CampBrain is considered an asset.
- Ability to balance essential documentation requirements with a strong frontline presence.
- Minimum 17 years of age is required.
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C is required.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.

Work Environment:

- Live-in role during camp sessions, with opportunity to stay on-site over weekends, as requested.
- This is a highly active, frontline role requiring significant time in cabins, program areas, dining spaces, and throughout the camp site.
- Requires flexibility, high energy, sound judgment, and the ability to respond calmly to changing camper and staffing needs.
- Active participation in camper routines, transitions, recreational activities, and camp-wide events is expected.
