Ready to lead projects, not just work on them?
You have built a strong foundation in mechanical building systems. You can design, coordinate, solve problems, and deliver, but you may still be waiting for the opportunity to lead a project, advise clients, mentor others, or have a meaningful voice in how the work gets done.
At Sense Engineering , this role is designed for an engineer or designer who is ready for that next step. You will take greater ownership of projects, work directly with clients and decision-makers, guide junior team members, and contribute to the continued growth of our mechanical practice. You will be supported by experienced professionals while being trusted to exercise your judgment, develop practical solutions, and build the leadership experience needed for the next stage of your career.
About Sense Engineering:
At Sense Engineering , we pride ourselves on exceeding client expectations through exceptional engineering services. We are committed to fostering a positive, supportive and collaborative work workplace where every team member contributes to delivering solutions that make a meaningful impact. Sense Engineering has over 130 employees across North America, providing restoration, capital planning, structural, mechanical, building envelope, accessibility, and energy optimization services for buildings.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer (Intermediate), you will contribute to mechanical building-system projects from initial investigation and scope development through design, construction, and completion. Your work may include mechanical equipment assessments, HVAC and plumbing design, building renewals and retrofits, energy optimization, system feasibility studies, and construction-phase services.
This role is intended for someone who wants to move beyond a narrowly defined production position. Depending on your experience and goals, you will have opportunities to lead assignments, manage client relationships, develop fees and scopes,
mentor junior team members, participate in proposals, and contribute to technical standards and quality processes.
Represent Sense Engineering professionally, building positive relationships with clients, contractors and other consultants.
Enhance your technical expertise and stay current on industry trends and best practices.
Technical Responsibilities:
Perform analysis, design, modelling, and detailing for mechanical building systems on a variety of construction, renewal, and retrofit projects.
Develop practical HVAC and plumbing solutions that respond to client objectives, existing-building conditions, applicable codes, constructability, energy performance, and lifecycle considerations.
Lead projects of increasing size and complexity from initial scope identification through construction completion, including work planning, coordination, technical reviews, schedule management, and client communication.
Prepare design reports, system comparisons, feasibility studies, mechanical construction documents, equipment specifications, and opinions of probable cost.
Conduct site surveys, mechanical assessments, and field reviews to document existing conditions and confirm that construction generally aligns with the design intent.
Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, electrical, structural, and other consulting disciplines.
Apply applicable mechanical building codes, standards, engineering principles, and internal quality requirements to project work.
Represent Sense Engineering in client meetings, project discussions, site meetings,
and industry events with a commitment to responsive and professional service.
Provide guidance and technical oversight to junior engineers, designers, and technical staff assigned to project delivery.
Contribute to proposals, scope and fee development, internal knowledge sharing, technical standards, and the continued growth of the mechanical practice.
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college, or certification as a mechanical engineering technologist.
Approximately 5–10 years of relevant experience in mechanical building-system assessment, design, coordination, or project delivery. Membership with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) is an asset.
Strong working knowledge of mechanical building codes, industry standards, engineering fundamentals, design practices, and quality requirements.
Proficiency in AutoCAD. Experience with Revit, BIM workflows, and energy-modelling software is an asset.
Experience preparing coordinated drawings, specifications, reports, and other technical deliverables for building projects.
The ability to work collaboratively while independently managing priorities, commitments, and project responsibilities.
