Company Description: North Mist Studios is an Indie team of experienced AAA video game developers united by a passion for creating story-rich games that blend atmospheric design, compelling narratives, and immersive gameplay. With an aversion to generative artificial intelligence (AI), team members work closely together to build original IPs that highlight character-driven, player-choice reactive games with uniquely Canadian twists. Applicants can expect a highly collaborative, creative culture that values thoughtful design, experimentation, cross-discipline cohesion and high levels of communication.
Role Description: The Game Designer – Missions and Levels, is a full-time/part-time, remote role for a six month contract inside of Canada. Must be legally able to work in Canada.
Responsibilities:
- Designing missions, levels, and moment-to-moment player experiences that support narrative and gameplay goals.
- Building and iterating level layouts, defining mission objectives and scripting events, collaborating with writers, artists, system designers and programmers.
- Align design with story, visuals and the product's direction.
- Playtesting content to identify improvements and provide clear feedback to the team.
- Document systems and mission structures in explicit, organized formats.
- Help maintain consistency of game balance and player experience across platforms.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience as a Designer in the video game industry.
- Canadian based and able to legally work in Canada.
- Strong Game Design skills, including missions, progression, and systems.
- Level Design experience in creating layouts, encounter spaces, and pacing that support narrative and gameplay.
- Game Development experience working with Unreal Engine 5 and collaborating in cross-disciplinary teams.
- A deep, mechanical understanding of survival horror games. You know why limited inventory space creates tension, how scarcity drives player choices, and how to unnerve players without relying purely on combat.
- Ability to create clear design documentation and communicate ideas effectively to both technical and non-technical team members.
- Comfort with iterative design, playtesting, and using feedback and metrics to refine levels and missions.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
Nice to have:
- Previous experience in narrative or mission-based games, and familiarity with drama or mystery genres.
- Able to provide a video portfolio exhibiting relevant design skills.
- Relevant post-secondary education in game design, computer science, interactive media, or equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- A proactive, collaborative attitude with the ability to wear multiple hats and self-manage amid evolving project constraints.
- Strong communication skills. Professional fluency in English is highly preferred.
