This course introduces students to the theoretical foundations of medical anthropology and explores the application of critical social science theory to medical practice and health issues.
This course is an academic exploration of the influence of culture widely defined on illness, health, and medical practice. The course begins with an examination of the concept of "culture" and its relationship to health as well as an introduction to the field of medical anthropology. The cultural construction of medical knowledge and practice will then be introduced, and we will examine the (unfamiliar) notion of Western biomedicine as a cultural system. The meanings and representations of illness will be explored. We will also review representations of the body, explore the relationships between different forms of structural violence and health, and examine intersectionality theory. The assigned book and readings provide an prospect to evaluate the application of concepts central to the course in specific case studies. Overall, the course is constructed to assist students in critically examining the assumptions that influence common understandings of illness, health, and health care.
