The Mechanical Designer / Draftsperson is responsible for independently developing mechanical designs, 3D models, and detailed fabrication drawings for custom metal fabrication projects.
This role requires the ability to transform customer requirements, conceptual designs, and engineering specifications into practical, manufacturable components and assemblies. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, sound mechanical aptitude, and a thorough understanding of metal fabrication processes.
Working closely with project managers, estimating, machine programmers, and shop operations, the Mechanical Designer / Draftsperson will contribute to projects from initial concept development through detailed design, fabrication, and final assembly.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently design mechanical components, fabricated assemblies, and custom equipment from customer requirements, conceptual sketches, and functional specifications.
- Develop, revise, and maintain detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Translate design concepts into complete, fabrication-ready drawing packages, including assembly drawings, component details, bills of materials (BOMs), and material specifications.
- Design sheet metal components, structural weldments, frames, brackets, supports, and complex fabricated assemblies.
- Apply sound mechanical design principles to ensure functionality, structural integrity, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.
- Evaluate design alternatives and develop practical solutions to mechanical and fabrication challenges.
- Interpret customer drawings, engineering specifications, GD&T;, and applicable technical standards.
- Prepare flat patterns, cut lists, material layouts, and component details to support CNC programming and production.
- Incorporate appropriate dimensions, tolerances, weld details, material specifications, and finishing requirements into manufacturing drawings.
- Review designs for manufacturability, assembly requirements, material utilization, and production efficiency.
- Collaborate with project managers, estimating, machine programmers,
and production personnel throughout the design and manufacturing process.
- Provide technical support during fabrication and assembly, including resolving design discrepancies and implementing necessary modifications.
- Verify component fitment, dimensional accuracy, and assembly compatibility.
- Maintain accurate drawing revisions, document control, and organized project files.
- Identify opportunities for design improvement, standardization, material optimization, and reduction of fabrication costs.
- Ensure designs and drawings meet customer specifications, applicable standards, and internal quality requirements.
- Follow all safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in both SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Proven experience independently designing mechanical components and assemblies in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to develop practical designs from concepts and functional requirements.
- Experience producing detailed 3D models, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials.
- Strong understanding of metal fabrication processes, including cutting, forming, welding, machining, and assembly.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, dimensional tolerances, and GD&T.;
- Knowledge of mechanical design principles, material selection, and manufacturing constraints.
- Ability to evaluate design challenges and develop effective, cost-conscious solutions.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and technical problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with project managers and production personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced SolidWorks experience, including Sheet Metal, Weldments, large assemblies, and design configurations.
- Experience designing custom industrial equipment, structural assemblies, machine components, or fabricated products.
- Familiarity with stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum, and specialty alloys.
- Experience designing components for laser cutting, CNC punching, press brake forming, machining, and welding.
- Knowledge of welding symbols, fabrication standards, and quality inspection requirements.
- Experience performing basic mechanical calculations, evaluating loads, and selecting appropriate materials and components.
- Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM), material optimization, and continuous improvement.
- Experience developing prototypes and supporting design validation and testing.
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and drawing revision control.
- Experience working directly with customers to develop design concepts and resolve technical requirements.
