Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Development and Delivery, the Senior Developer, Digital provides technical leadership and hands-on expertise in designing, building, and maintaining Porter's React Native web and mobile applications. This role is a key contributor to scalability, performance, and reliability across the platform, and actively evolves Porter's engineering practices through hands-on delivery and mentorship of intermediate and junior developers.

The Senior Developer, Digital leads by example in applying strong engineering discipline (CI/CD, automation, observability, secure coding, AI-assisted development) while contributing to the technical roadmap supporting Porter's Flying Refined digital experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and deliver complex features across Porter's React Native web and mobile applications (iOS, Android, and web), balancing scalability, performance, security, and maintainability
- Use AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) as a core part of daily workflow to accelerate feature delivery, refactoring, testing, and debugging, and evaluate AI-generated output before it enters the codebase
- Define and recommend AI-assisted engineering patterns within the pod, and consult with intermediate and junior developers on prompt patterns, tool selection, and validation practices
- Design and deliver shared libraries and integrations across the web and mobile surface, and liaise with back-end engineering on API contracts, error handling, and end-to-end reliability
- Construct and deliver CI/CD pipeline contributions (GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline), release automation, and build performance improvements for the web and mobile surface
- Design and generate observability instrumentation (Datadog, Dynatrace, Firebase) so failures, performance regressions, and user-impacting events surface with actionable context
- Liaise with the QA Automation team on testability, coverage strategy, and pipeline-integrated quality gates
- Evaluate design proposals through technical design reviews and code reviews, and illustrate engineering craft to intermediate and junior developers through pairing, worked examples, and pattern documentation (testability, observability, security, performance, AI-assisted workflows)

- Evaluate emerging AI-native development capabilities (agentic coding tools, AI code review, on-device LLMs, generative UX patterns) and prescribe targeted applications for Porter's roadmap
- Deliver App Store, Google Play, and web release processes, and generate release notes, changelogs, and regression risk summaries using AI
- Diagnose incidents through post-mortem analysis and recommend resilience improvements across the web and mobile surface
- Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and libraries that improve developer productivity and application scalability
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, refinement, demos, retrospectives) and use AI to accelerate ticket refinement, estimation preparation, and retrospective synthesis
- Actively participate in Porter's Safety Management System (SMS) by reporting hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations, and promoting a culture of safety

Behavioural Competencies
- Concern for Safety: Identifying hazardous or potentially hazardous situations and taking appropriate action to maintain a safe environment for self and others.
- Teamwork: Working collaboratively with others to achieve organizational goals.
- Passenger/Customer Service: Providing service excellence to internal and/or external customers (passengers).
- Initiative: Dealing with situations and issues proactively and persistently, seizing opportunities that arise.
- Results Focus: Focusing efforts on achieving high quality results consistent with the organization’s standards.
- Fostering Communication: Listening and communicating openly, honestly, and respectfully with different audiences, promoting dialogue and building consensus.

Qualifications

- 5+ years of experience developing production applications with React Native, ideally with experience shipping to iOS, Android, and web from a shared codebase
- Deep proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, component-driven architecture, state management, and asynchronous programming

- Strong grounding in software engineering principles (OOP, design patterns, modular architecture, testability, secure coding) and the ability to apply them to up-to-date React Native codebases
- Proven ability to design and deliver scalable, maintainable, and secure applications across web and mobile
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and release management for web and mobile (GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, Fastlane, EAS, or similar)
- Working familiarity with observability tooling (Datadog, Dynatrace, Firebase) for application performance, error handling, and user-impact monitoring
- Experience integrating RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs, cloud-hosted services, and third-party SDKs
- Demonstrated ability to mentor intermediate and junior developers through code review, design review, and pairing
- Demonstrated proficiency leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) as a core part of daily workflow, and a track record of coaching others on effective use; ability to design effective prompts, evaluate model output, and codify validated patterns for team use is expected
- Solid understanding of secure coding and data protection practices
- Experience with mobile analytics, crash reporting, and app store submission processes (App Store, Google Play)
- Effective communication and collaboration within Agile, cross-functional product teams
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and cloud services (AWS) is an asset
- Experience working within a product operating model or closely with business stakeholders is an asset
- Aviation industry experience is an asset
