At Catlin, we believe exceptional homes are built by people who take pride in their work, value the details and are committed to doing things the right way.
Specializing in custom homes and high-end renovations, we bring together skilled tradespeople who share a commitment to quality craftsmanship, collaboration and an exceptional client experience.
We're looking for a motivated Apprentice Carpenter who is eager to learn, ready to contribute and interested in building a long-term career in residential construction.
Our projects offer exposure to multiple stages of the building process, from structural framing and rough carpentry through to finishing details. Rather than focusing on one aspect of the trade, you'll have the opportunity to develop a well-rounded understanding of custom home construction while working alongside experienced carpenters, including Red Seal and Journeyperson Carpenters.
At Catlin, we recognize that great carpenters aren't developed overnight. They grow through hands-on experience, mentorship, accountability and a genuine willingness to learn.
The Role
As an Apprentice Carpenter, you'll be an important part of our site team, supporting daily construction activities while developing the technical skills, confidence and professional standards needed to advance in your trade.
You'll work closely with our Site Supervisors and Lead Carpenters, contributing to the quality, organization and efficiency of our projects.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting daily site preparation, material handling, organization and cleanup to maintain a professional, safe and efficient working environment.
- Assisting Site Supervisors, Lead Carpenters and fellow team members with carpentry and construction activities.
- Performing carpentry tasks appropriate to your experience, with opportunities to develop your skills across different stages of construction.
- Safely operating, maintaining and caring for hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Taking ownership of site cleanliness, material organization and general job-site presentation.
- Following Catlin's health and safety standards and all site-specific requirements, including maintaining valid Working at Heights certification and appropriate PPE.
- Accurately tracking time, completing daily logs and maintaining required project documentation through Buildertrend.
- Referencing construction drawings, project documentation, Buildertrend and site binders to understand assigned work and project requirements.
- Thinking ahead by identifying upcoming material, tool, equipment and consumable requirements and communicating them to the Site Supervisor or Lead Carpenter.
- Arriving prepared each day with the required tools outlined in Catlin's Tool List.
- Taking direction, asking thoughtful questions and applying feedback to continuously improve your skills and workmanship.
Experience & Technical Skills
This opportunity is ideal for someone in the early stages of their carpentry career, with up to two years of experience in residential construction, carpentry or related education and training.
We're looking for candidates who have, or are actively developing:
- A foundational understanding of residential construction methods, materials and carpentry practices.
- The ability to interpret basic construction drawings, measurements, dimensions and project information.
- Familiarity with common building materials, including framing lumber, plywood, MDF, trim and mouldings.
- Working knowledge of common carpentry tools, including squares, levels, drills, clamps, bits and layout equipment.
- An understanding of safe tool operation, job-site practices and hazard identification.
- Strong attention to detail and an appreciation for quality workmanship.
- The physical ability to perform construction-related tasks in varying weather and site conditions.
- A willingness to develop technical skills, improve efficiency and take on new challenges.
We don't expect you to know everything. We do expect you to take your development seriously.
The Catlin Mindset
Craftsmanship matters. Character matters just as much.
At Catlin, how we work is just as important as the finished product. We value people who take ownership of their responsibilities, respect their teammates and understand that every detail contributes to the overall success of a project.
We're looking for someone who:
- Shows up ready. Dependable, punctual, organized and prepared to contribute every day.
- Takes pride in their work. Understands that quality is built through attention to detail, care and consistency.
- Is eager to learn. Welcomes guidance, asks questions and sees feedback as an opportunity to grow.
- Takes accountability. Follows through on responsibilities, communicates challenges and takes ownership of their work.
- Thinks like a teammate. Works respectfully and collaboratively with coworkers, Site Supervisors, subcontractors and other project partners.
- Is adaptable. Understands that construction is dynamic and can adjust to changing priorities and site conditions.
- Respects the process. Recognizes the importance of safety, organization, documentation and clear communication.
- Wants to build a career. Is genuinely interested in developing their craft and growing within a company that values its people.
Qualifications
- Previous residential construction experience or relevant carpentry education/training.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Registered apprenticeship status or eligibility to pursue apprenticeship registration, where applicable.
- Valid Ontario driver's licence and reliable transportation to various project locations.
- Valid Working at Heights certification or ability to obtain certification before starting.
- Ability to provide a police background check if required.
- Availability to work Monday through Friday.
- Strong communication skills, a positive attitude and a collaborative approach to work.
