Position Summary
How can we design healthcare systems that are safer, more effective, and better for the people who work within them? The HumanEra Research Team at North York General investigates this question by studying healthcare as it happens in the real world. Led by the NYG Research Chair in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, our team uses human factors approaches to understand how people, teams, technologies, and work environments interact to influence safety and performance. Our research spans patient and workplace safety, occupational injury prevention, teamwork, psychological safety, and the design and improvement of healthcare systems.
We are seeking a motivated, highly organized, and collaborative Research Manager II to help lead this dynamic program of applied research. Our projects employ diverse methods, including direct observation with creative technologies such as the Operating Room Black Box (now Aimbient Suite), in-situ simulation, qualitative and quantitative research, mixed methods, and evidence synthesis.
You will contribute across the research lifecycle: identifying opportunities, grant writing, managing budgets and contracts, preparing research protocols and ethics submissions, coordinating and executing studies, analyzing and interpreting findings, and translating findings into practical improvements through academic publications, presentations, and other knowledge translation activities. Beyond individual projects, you will help shape research priorities, oversee multiple concurrent projects, supervise and mentor research staff and students, and as a key representative of HumanEra build trusted relationships with clinicians, hospital leaders, and academic partners. We are looking for a self-directed and adaptable professional who takes initiative, anticipates challenges, and is comfortable making decisions and advancing work with appropriate independence.
This role offers the opportunity to combine scientific inquiry with research leadership, and make meaningful improvements to the safety and well-being of healthcare workers and patients
On a practical level, you will
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the research program, including human resources, financial management, progress monitoring, continuous improvement, and operational and strategic planning.
- Identify and help develop new research opportunities and partnerships that advance the strategic priorities and growth of the HumanEra research program.
- Contribute to the program’s scientific direction and lead or support the development of research proposals, grant applications, study protocols, ethics submissions, and project plans.
- Contribute directly to research activities across the program, including study design, data collection and analysis, interpretation of findings, knowledge synthesis, and preparation of scholarly publications, conference presentations, reports, and other knowledge translation products.
- Design and implement program- and project-level research management systems and processes to coordinate multiple concurrent studies, monitor milestones and deliverables, manage risks, and ensure alignment with NYG policies, regulatory requirements, and funder expectations.
- Recruit, hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate research staff, and coordinate student and trainee research activities, including placements and thesis projects.
- Serve as a key representative and point of contact for HumanEra, building and maintaining trusted relationships with clinicians, hospital leaders, researchers, patient/public partners, knowledge users, students, funders, and external collaborators.
- Develop and manage research study budgets, payment schedules, financial tracking, research agreements, and funding terms in collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Lead, facilitate and chair research program meetings.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in human factors, quality improvement and patient safety, health services research, psychology, human-computer interaction, or a related field, with minimum five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of advanced education and experience, in applied healthcare research and/or research program management. Expertise in human factors, quality improvement, patient safety, or related health systems disciplines is preferred
- Experience conducting, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, including design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination.
- Experience conducting knowledge syntheses (e.g., scoping reviews, systematic reviews, umbrella reviews, realist reviews).
- Experience working with clinicians, patients, researchers, operational leaders, and other health system partners to design and conduct research in complex healthcare environments.
- Strong research program and project management skills, including experience developing workflows, coordinating multiple concurrent studies, managing timelines and deliverables, supporting research ethics, governance, data management, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to independently drive complex projects forward, anticipate next steps, identify and resolve barriers, and deliver results across multiple concurrent priorities.
- Experience in digital environments and a strong willingness to learn new digital software and programs; proficiency with Microsoft Office/MS 365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
- Expertise with data management and project management tools and standard operating procedures.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic research environment
- Excellent communication (verbal, written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information and contribute to research protocols, presentations, and manuscripts.
- Experience with human-centered design, co-design, simulation, observational research or evaluation of healthcare work systems is an asset.
