This position requires flexible availability, as shifts will vary depending on the needs of the Health Centre, and will include some on-call and short-notice work. including checks with previous employers and a vulnerable sector criminal record check.CORE RESPONSIBILITIESAssessing symptoms, administering medications, assessing and treating injuries, and directing follow upEducating and informing students about nutrition and self-care, managing medications, and disease preventionProviding healthcare services to students throughout the day, managing students who are unable to attend class and communicating with teachers, house directors and coachesAdministering first aid and care of all students and staffManaging student medicationsEnsuring first aid kits for teams and away trips are stocked and available to sign outMaintaining the Health Centre, ensuring an attractive, hygienic, suitably equipped spaceContacting parents, as needed, regarding significant medical concernsEnsuring House Directors are provided with a list of updated student health concernsBeing available to staff leading school trips to offer advice and informationManaging student appointments within both Shawnigan Lake School and external health and medical centres and coordinating with transportation to ensure students arrive at their various health and medical appointmentsInforming students about student resources available through the Health CentreImmunizing children against vaccine preventable diseaseProviding support and care for a range of mental health issuesREQUIREMENTSEducation, Experience & SkillsGraduate from an approved School of NursingCurrent practicing registration and criminal record check as required of a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)Minimum three years experience as a registered nurse preferredValid and Current CPR-CPediatric and/or Emergency Room experience strongly preferredCompletion of BCCDC Immunization Competency CourseTact and confidentiality in dealing with all mattersIndependent but with the ability to work as part of a teamFlexibility in approach to people and to working arrangementsAble to respond calmly, quickly and willingly to urgent and unexpected requestsStrong interpersonal skills and communication skillsShawnigan Lake School is an equal prospect employer committed to establishing an inclusive, equitable, and accessible environment for all.
