Toronto

Halliwell is seeking a highly analytical, detail-oriented, and technically capable Civil / Structural Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team.

This position may be based in either Toronto, Ontario or Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

In this role, you will investigate structural failures, assess damage to buildings and civil infrastructure, evaluate the condition and integrity of structural systems, and develop technically sound recommendations for repair, restoration, or replacement.

You will conduct site inspections, analyze engineering evidence, identify potential failure mechanisms, and prepare comprehensive technical reports that help clients understand the cause, extent, and implications of structural damage.

Working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines and technical specialists, you will provide objective, evidence-based assessments and practical solutions that balance structural safety, technical feasibility, durability, and cost considerations.

The ideal candidate is a strong problem-solver with sound engineering judgment, excellent technical writing skills, and a genuine interest in investigating complex structural and building-related failures.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Structural Failure Analysis and Damage Assessment

- Investigate structural failures, building damage, and defects affecting residential, commercial, industrial, and other built environments.
- Conduct site inspections and technical assessments of structural elements, including foundations, columns, beams, slabs, load-bearing walls, roof structures, and connections.
- Evaluate damage associated with settlement, movement, cracking, corrosion, water intrusion, impact, fire, wind, and other environmental or operational events.
- Identify potential failure mechanisms, contributing factors, and the likely causes of structural distress.
- Assess the extent and severity of damage and determine its implications for structural integrity, serviceability, and safety.
- Review available drawings, specifications, construction records, photographs, inspection reports, and other relevant technical documentation.
- Recommend additional investigations, testing, monitoring, or specialist assessments where necessary to support reliable conclusions.

Engineering Analysis and Technical Reporting

- Perform structural calculations and engineering analyses to evaluate the adequacy, performance, and condition of affected structures.
- Interpret site observations, test results, material data, and engineering documentation to develop evidence-based technical conclusions.
- Prepare detailed engineering reports outlining the scope of investigation, observations, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Provide objective and independent technical opinions supported by engineering principles, documented evidence, and applicable standards.
- Distinguish between observed damage, potential contributing factors, and conclusions supported by the available evidence.
- Communicate complex structural issues clearly to clients, insurers, property owners, contractors, legal professionals, and other stakeholders, as applicable.
- Maintain accurate records of site inspections, calculations, photographs, testing, and supporting documentation.

Repair, Restoration, and Replacement Strategies

- Evaluate the feasibility and technical suitability of repairing, strengthening, restoring, or replacing damaged structural elements and systems.
- Develop practical remedial strategies that address identified defects, structural deficiencies, and underlying causes of damage.
- Assess proposed repair methodologies, construction scopes, material specifications, and contractor recommendations.
- Review repair and replacement cost estimates for technical completeness, reasonableness, and alignment with the recommended scope of work.
- Compare repair and replacement options, considering structural performance, durability, safety, constructability, and cost.
- Identify potential risks, limitations, and assumptions associated with proposed remediation strategies.
- Provide actionable recommendations that support safe restoration, informed financial decisions, and the return of affected properties or infrastructure to functional use.

Site Inspections and Field Investigations

- Plan and undertake site visits to inspect damaged buildings, structural systems, and civil infrastructure.
- Document structural defects and damage through photographs, measurements, sketches, and field notes.
- Assess visible distress, including cracking, deformation, displacement, settlement, corrosion, and deterioration.
- Coordinate material testing, specialist investigations, monitoring, or other diagnostic activities when required.
- Identify immediate structural safety concerns and recommend appropriate precautions or further assessment where necessary.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, building professionals, and other specialists to gather information and clarify site conditions.
- Prepare clear inspection findings and communicate recommended next steps.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Client Support

- Collaborate with civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, and other technical specialists to investigate complex damage scenarios.
- Contribute structural engineering expertise to multidisciplinary evaluations and integrated recovery strategies.
- Coordinate technical information, investigation findings, and recommendations across project teams.
- Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and presentations to explain engineering conclusions.
- Support the development of practical recovery plans that address the technical and commercial implications of damage.
- Maintain qualified independence, confidentiality, and technical integrity throughout all assignments.

Safety, Quality, and Professional Standards

- Ensure engineering assessments and recommendations consider applicable building codes, structural design standards, and relevant safety requirements.
- Apply sound engineering judgment and appropriate quality-control procedures to calculations, analyses, and reports.
- Identify structural risks and communicate safety-critical findings promptly through appropriate channels.

- Maintain awareness of developments in structural engineering, forensic investigation methods, construction materials, and repair technologies.
- Work in accordance with applicable professional requirements, company procedures, and recognized industry best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Relevant experience in structural engineering, building assessments, construction, engineering consultancy, damage investigations, or forensic engineering.
- Strong understanding of structural behavior, load paths, construction methods, building materials, and structural failure mechanisms.
- Ability to interpret structural drawings, design calculations, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Experience conducting site inspections and evaluating structural defects, deterioration, or damage.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and well-structured technical reports.
- Familiarity with relevant building codes, structural design standards, and engineering assessment methods.
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant structural analysis, design, or drafting software.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

SKILLS:

- Experience in forensic structural engineering, structural failure investigations, property damage assessments, or technical consulting.
- Experience evaluating damage caused by fire, water intrusion, wind, impact, ground movement, settlement, or material deterioration.
- Familiarity with insurance-related engineering investigations, repair scope development, or construction cost assessments.
- Experience evaluating remedial works, structural strengthening, rehabilitation, and reconstruction options.
- Knowledge of non-destructive testing, material testing, and structural condition assessment techniques.
- Relevant professional engineering registration or licensure, where applicable.
- Experience preparing technical reports or opinions for insurance claims, dispute resolution, or legal proceedings, where relevant.
- Willingness to travel to client sites and conduct field inspections as required.

Key Attributes:

- Investigative thinking: The ability to examine complex damage, evaluate evidence, and identify credible explanations for structural failures.
- Technical integrity: A commitment to objective, independent, and evidence-based engineering conclusions.
- Engineering judgment: The ability to assess structural safety, performance, and the practical implications of damage.
- Commercial awareness: The ability to evaluate repair and replacement options with consideration for cost, durability, and long-term performance.
