By connecting scientific knowledge, education, and community engagement, we aim to inspire collective action toward a more sustainable future for people and the planet.

We are developing digital experiences that help people explore global challenges, discover their role in advancing sustainability, and turn knowledge into meaningful action. We are looking for a Volunteer UX Designer to help make these experiences intuitive, accessible, and engaging for everyone.

About the Role

As a Volunteer UX Designer, you will help shape how users discover, navigate, and interact with CoGs’ digital platforms and resources. Working collaboratively with our volunteer team, you will contribute to understanding user needs, identifying usability challenges, and designing solutions that make our digital experiences more accessible and engaging.

This is an opportunity to apply your UX skills to a purpose-driven initiative while building practical experience and contributing to a meaningful mission.

Key Responsibilities

- User research: Conduct or support user research through interviews, surveys, and usability testing to understand user needs and behaviours.
- User journey mapping: Identify user needs, navigation challenges, and opportunities to improve the experience across our website and digital tools.
- UX/UI design: Develop user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and visual interface designs.
- Accessibility and usability:

Apply user-centred design principles and accessibility best practices to create inclusive digital experiences.
- Design systems: Help develop and maintain reusable design components and guidelines to ensure consistency across CoGs’ digital platforms.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work with volunteer developers, content creators, and other team members to translate design concepts into practical solutions.
- Feedback and iteration: Present design ideas, participate in team check-ins, and refine solutions based on feedback and user testing.

Qualifications and Skills We welcome candidates with professional, academic, bootcamp, or self-directed experience in UX/UI design.

The ideal candidate will have:

- Experience or demonstrated interest in UX/UI design, supported by a portfolio or examples of relevant projects.
- Familiarity with Figma or a comparable design and prototyping tool.
- An understanding of user-centred design principles, usability, and information architecture.
- Awareness of digital accessibility principles and inclusive design practices.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage agreed-upon tasks independently.

Nice to Have

- Experience with nonprofit organizations, community initiatives, or mission-driven digital products.
- Familiarity with WCAG accessibility guidelines,

particularly WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS.
- Experience designing websites, educational resources, or interactive digital experiences.

What You’ll Gain

- Meaningful impact: Contribute to digital experiences that support knowledge-sharing, learning, and action on global challenges.
- Portfolio development: Build practical design experience and, where project scope permits, portfolio-ready case studies.
- Collaboration and learning: Work alongside a multidisciplinary team of volunteers and changemakers.
- Professional recognition: Become eligible for a reference letter and LinkedIn recommendation after three months of active volunteering, subject to demonstrated contributions.
- Adaptable participation: Contribute remotely within an agreed-upon schedule that accommodates your other commitments.

Time Commitment This is an unpaid volunteer position requiring approximately 4–6 hours per week, with a minimum commitment of three months. Tasks and priorities will be agreed upon collaboratively to support a manageable and productive volunteer experience.

How to Apply

Interested candidates are invited to submit:

- A resume.
- A link to their portfolio or examples of relevant UX/UI projects.

Please send your application to [email protected] with the subject line Volunteer UX Designer – [Your Name]. Application deadline: October 30, 2026.

CoGs welcomes volunteers from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. If you require accommodations during the application process, please let us know.
