Why Join Vevex?
For more than 23 years, we've built custom wooden crates and packing solutions for items that are too valuable, fragile, unusual, or important to risk during transportation.
We’re looking for a Service Technician to work both in the field and in our Vancouver shop. You’ll help pack and prepare items at customer locations and, when you’re in the shop, help build the custom wooden crates that protect them. Because every shipment is different, this isn’t an assembly-line job where you build the same thing every day.
You don’t need to be an experienced carpenter or crate builder, but you do need to be comfortable working with your hands and tools, paying attention to details, following instructions, and figuring things out.
You’ll develop practical skills in packing, crating, woodworking, assembly, and problem-solving while working on a wide variety of projects. It’s tangible work: you start with a problem and finish with something you helped build, pack, or protect.
What You’ll Do
This is a blended position combining field service and shop work.
In the Field
You’ll travel to customer locations to prepare items for safe transportation.
Depending on the project, you’ll:
- Travel to customer locations to pack and prepare items for transportation.
- Review each job and prepare the tools, materials, and equipment you’ll need.
- Measure, pack, assemble, or disassemble items as required.
- Work carefully around artwork, furniture, equipment, electronics, and other valuable or unusual items.
- Use hand and power tools to complete the work.
- Work professionally with customers, movers, coworkers, and other people on site.
- Solve practical problems when a job doesn’t go exactly according to plan.
In the Shop
When you’re not working in the field, you’ll support our team building custom crates in our Vancouver shop.
You’ll:
- Measure and cut wood and other materials.
- Help build and assemble custom wooden crates.
- Use hand and power tools safely.
- Follow measurements and project specifications carefully.
- Prepare materials and components for upcoming jobs.
- Check your work for accuracy and quality.
- Help the team get projects completed properly and on schedule.
What We’re Looking For
We can teach you how we build a Vevex crate. What’s harder to teach is curiosity, resourcefulness, and the willingness to learn.
You’ll likely do well here if you:
- Regular drivers license is required
- Have some hands-on experience using hand and power tools.
- Enjoy building, assembling, fixing, or figuring out how things work.
- Pay attention to details and take pride in getting things right.
- Can follow instructions while also thinking for yourself.
- Are comfortable tackling something you haven’t done before.
- Are dependable and work well with others.
- Are skilled and respectful at customer locations.
- Are comfortable with the physical demands of hands-on work.
- Can work occasional weekends when projects require it.
Previous woodworking or carpentry experience is an asset, but not required.
You should be comfortable standing, bending,
carrying materials, working with tools, and safely lifting and handling heavier items as part of a team.
Schedule
This is a full time(40 hours per week) position. Vevex’s regular shop hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some projects may require weekend work, so flexibility to work occasional weekends is important.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation: $24-29 per hour, depending on experience
Benefits:
- Vacation is 2 weeks per year, included as a 4% add on for each pay cheque.
- Over 40 hours per week is time and half pay
How to Apply
Your résumé tells us about your experience; the two questions below help us understand how you approach problems and learn.
Please answer both questions as part of your application.
Attention to detail and following instructions are important parts of this job. Applications that do not include answers to both questions will not be considered.
Short, straightforward answers are completely fine. We’re more interested in how you think than how polished your writing is.
Choose 2 of the following questions to use:
- You buy a used piece of IKEA furniture that has already been taken apart. It comes with a bag of hardware but no instructions. What do you do?
- What's something you've taught yourself how to do that involves working with your hands?
Pay: $25.00-$29.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
Benefits:
- Casual dress
- On-site parking
- Paid time off
