About Phoenix Glass and Aluminum
Phoenix Glass & Aluminum (2020) Ltd. is an Ottawa-based glazing contractor specializing in commercial architectural glass and aluminum systems. Our projects include storefronts, curtain wall, entrances, windows and other glazing systems for commercial, institutional and multi-unit developments.
We are seeking an experienced estimator who can take ownership of the estimating process and prepare accurate, complete and competitive bids. This position works closely with the President, project managers, suppliers, fabrication team and field operations.
Position Summary The Senior Estimator is responsible for reviewing tender opportunities, interpreting drawings and specifications, completing detailed quantity takeoffs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor pricing, preparing cost estimates and producing complete bid packages.
The successful candidate must understand architectural glazing systems and be able to identify scope requirements, drawing discrepancies, exclusions, project risks and missing information before an estimate is submitted.
This is more than a quantity takeoff position. We are looking for someone who understands how a glazing project will be purchased, fabricated, delivered and installed.
Primary Responsibilities
- Review bid invitations and tender documents for commercial glazing opportunities
- Review architectural drawings, specifications, schedules, details, addenda and supplementary instructions
- Determine the complete glass and aluminum scope of work
- Complete detailed quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam Revu
- Estimate storefront, curtain wall, window wall, punched windows, aluminum entrances, doors and related glazing systems
- Calculate glass, aluminum, hardware, sealants, membranes, fasteners and accessory requirements
- Prepare aluminum material takeoffs and preliminary cutting requirements
- Obtain pricing from glass, aluminum, window, hardware and equipment-rental suppliers
- Prepare and issue supplier and subcontractor requests for quotation
- Review and normalize supplier quotations to confirm that pricing is complete and comparable
- Coordinate with Phoenix’s project, fabrication and field personnel to establish realistic labour requirements
- Prepare complete Excel estimates, cost breakdowns and internal bid sheets
- Identify project risks, drawing conflicts, missing information and scope gaps
- Prepare project-specific inclusions, exclusions, qualifications and assumptions
- Maintain organized electronic estimate files, marked-up drawings, supplier quotations and revision records
- Revise estimates following addenda, scope changes or post-bid discussions
- Support project handover from estimating to project management after award
- Maintain relationships with general contractors, suppliers and industry contacts
- Assist with bid follow-up and future project opportunities
Required Qualifications
- At least five years of construction estimating experience
- Experience estimating architectural glass, aluminum, curtain wall, storefront or related building-envelope systems
- Strong ability to read architectural drawings, schedules, details and specifications
- Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu for quantity takeoffs and drawing review
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, organized cost build-ups and estimate summaries
- Understanding of material, fabrication, installation and equipment costs
- Ability to prepare clear scopes, qualifications, assumptions and exclusions
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tender deadlines
- Explicit written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage several estimates and deadlines simultaneously
- Ability to work independently while escalating material questions and risks before bid submission
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Canadian commercial construction tenders
- Existing knowledge of Ontario glazing and construction practices
- Experience with institutional, commercial, school or multi-unit residential projects
- Familiarity with aluminum entrances, door hardware and automatic operators
- Knowledge of insulating glass, coatings, safety glass, spandrel glass and bird-friendly glazing
- Experience preparing material optimization or aluminum cutting lists
- Established relationships with glass, aluminum, hardware or equipment suppliers
- Diploma or degree in construction estimating, architectural technology, civil engineering, construction management or a related discipline
Equivalent industry experience will also be considered. A degree or professional designation will not replace the requirement to demonstrate practical estimating ability.
Compensation
- Annual salary of $75,000 to $120,000
- Final compensation will depend on glazing experience, estimating knowledge, software proficiency and demonstrated ability to independently prepare complete estimates
- Company benefits available following successful completion of the probationary period
