About Amii
Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of Canada’s three main institutes for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, our world-renowned researchers drive fundamental and applied research at the University of Alberta (and other academic institutions), training some of the world’s top scientific talent. Our cross-functional teams work collaboratively with Alberta-based businesses and organizations to build AI capacity and translate scientific advancement into industry adoption and economic impact.
About The Role The Software Engineer plays a key role in architecting, building, and maintaining scalable full-stack applications and AI-integrated software solutions. As a key technical team member, the Software Engineer will collaborate with engineering leaders and cross-functional teams to design robust REST APIs, manage database systems, implement modern frontend UI/UX interfaces, leverage automated agentic coding tools, build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines using vector databases and AI orchestration frameworks, and deploy and maintain core Kubernetes services.
The Software Engineer will work with cross-functional product and engineering teams to design and deliver high-quality, production-ready software systems. Specifically, this engineer will focus on end-to-end full-stack development, including secure API design, database architecture, network protocols, responsive UI/UX frontends, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines. Additionally, the role is responsible for integrating state-of-the-art AI capabilities, such as RAG architectures using vector databases and orchestration frameworks, and embedding agentic developer workflows into the software development lifecycle.
In addition to hands-on technical architecture and execution, the Software Engineer will contribute to the strategic technical vision, working alongside the Director, Engineering to establish engineering best practices, coding standards, automated CI/CD workflows, and playbooks for scaling full-stack AI applications.
