Cedar Security is hiring undercover loss prevention officers for plainclothes assignments in retail environments across Toronto. You will operate independently in-store, blending in with customers to observe, identify, and deter theft and fraud.
Responsibilities
- Conducting covert surveillance on the sales floor
- Identifying organized retail crime patterns
- Executing lawful apprehensions under Criminal Code s.494
- Liaising with store management and local law enforcement
- Preparing detailed incident reports and evidence documentation
- Testifying in court or providing statements when required
You'll be expected to exercise sound judgment on when to intervene and when to observe. Not every situation calls for an apprehension — knowing the difference is what separates good LP officers from liabilities.
This is not a static post. You'll be on your feet, moving through the store, making real-time decisions. Some days are quiet. Others are not. You need to be comfortable with both.
Shifts vary and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on client needs. You may rotate between multiple retail locations.
Cedar provides training on our reporting standards and operational procedures, but you are expected to show up with a working knowledge of loss prevention fundamentals.
Requirements
- Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence (mandatory)
- Minimum 1–2 years of direct loss prevention or retail security experience
- Working knowledge of Criminal Code s.494 (citizen's arrest provisions) and the Trespass to Property Act
- Familiarity with CCTV systems and electronic article surveillance (EAS) technology
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to write explicit, accurate incident reports
- Clean criminal record (a background check will be conducted)
- Reliable personal vehicle and valid Ontario G driver's licence, as you may be assigned to different locations
- Professional demeanor — you need to be approachable enough to blend in, and composed enough to handle confrontations
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification is an asset
- Experience with court proceedings or providing witness statements is an asset
- Bilingual (English/French) is an asset but not required
