Thornhill

Coast2Coast First Aid & Aquatics Inc.

Location: Thornhill / Toronto, Ontario — Hybrid

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: CAD $75,000–$95,000 per year, depending on experience

About Coast2Coast

Coast2Coast First Aid & Aquatics Inc. is one of Canada's leading providers of First Aid, CPR/AED, Basic Life Support, instructor training, private training, and other safety programs.

We operate training locations across Canada and continue to invest in our websites, internal applications, digital tools, and technology infrastructure.

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on WordPress & Web Application Developer to take technical ownership of our existing WordPress website while also supporting the development of our contemporary web applications.

WordPress development is the primary focus of this position.

We need someone who is comfortable working directly with code, troubleshooting complex issues, improving existing systems, and independently implementing reliable technical solutions.

This is not a position focused primarily on website design, content editing, or drag-and-drop page builders.

What You'll Work On

- WordPress Development & Maintenance — Primary Focus

Our WordPress website is an important part of our business, supporting course registrations, organic search traffic, paid advertising, and customer acquisition across multiple locations.

You will be responsible for maintaining, improving, troubleshooting, and developing this website.

Responsibilities include

- Maintain and improve our existing WordPress website.
- Work directly with PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Develop and customize WordPress themes, child themes, and templates.
- Customize plugins and implement custom WordPress functionality.
- Troubleshoot plugin conflicts, PHP errors, broken functionality, and website bugs.
- Develop and improve course pages, location pages, landing pages, and reusable templates.
- Improve website speed, Core Web Vitals, and overall performance.
- Ensure consistent functionality across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
- Maintain website forms, integrations, tracking, and other business-critical functionality.
- Implement technical SEO improvements in collaboration with our SEO team.
- Protect existing URLs, redirects, structured data, and other SEO-critical elements when making changes.
- Manage updates, staging environments, backups, testing, and safe deployments.
- Identify recurring technical problems and implement sustainable solutions.

We are looking for someone who can diagnose and solve problems at the code level, rather than relying exclusively on plugins or page builders.
- Web Application Development — Secondary Focus

Alongside WordPress, you will support our growing internal web application environment.

Our applications use technologies including:

- Next.js
- React
- TypeScript / JavaScript
- Firebase
- Firestore
- APIs and third-party integrations

Responsibilities may include:
- Maintaining and improving existing web applications.
- Developing new features and enhancing existing functionality.
- Working with APIs, databases, and integrations.
- Troubleshooting application bugs and performance issues.
- Supporting authentication, roles, permissions, and protected functionality.
- Reviewing and improving existing application code.
- Testing changes and preventing regressions.
- Identifying security, data integrity, and maintainability risks.
- Working with Git and structured development workflows.

Experience with Next.js, React, and Firebase is a strong advantage, but WordPress development remains the primary focus.

You will not be expected to rebuild our applications from scratch.

- Technical Ownership, Testing & Reliability

We are looking for someone who takes responsibility for the systems they work on.

You should be comfortable

- Investigating problems independently and identifying root causes.
- Understanding existing code before making major modifications.

- Assessing technical risks before implementing changes.
- Using Git, branches, and version control.
- Testing changes before deployment.
- Working with development, staging, and production environments.
- Maintaining backups and rollback procedures.
- Identifying security vulnerabilities and outdated dependencies.
- Monitoring functionality after changes.
- Documenting important technical decisions and improvements.
- Communicating problems and solutions clearly to non-technical colleagues.

Our websites and applications are actively used, so reliability and careful deployment practices are essential.

Required Technical Skills

Strong practical experience in:

- WordPress development and maintenance.
- PHP programming.
- HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
- WordPress themes, child themes, and template customization.
- WordPress plugin customization and troubleshooting.
- Custom WordPress functionality.
- Website debugging and problem-solving.
- Responsive and mobile-friendly development.
- Website performance optimization.
- MySQL or similar database technologies.
- APIs and third-party integrations.
- Git and version control.
- Testing, deployment, backup, and rollback practices.

Important: Experience primarily limited to Elementor, Divi, Gutenberg, or other page builders, without meaningful coding experience, is not sufficient for this role.

Preferred Skills & Experience The following are valuable additional qualifications:

- React and Next.js development.
- TypeScript.
- Firebase and Firestore.
- Node.js.
- Full-stack application development.
- Authentication and authorization.
- Custom dashboards and administrative applications.
- SaaS or internal business applications.
- Large or multi-location WordPress websites.
- Technical SEO and Core Web Vitals.
- Google Search Console, Analytics, and Tag Manager.
- Payment, booking, CRM, and marketing integrations.
- Cloud hosting and deployment workflows.
- Working with marketing, SEO, and design teams.

You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed above. We prioritize strong development fundamentals, practical experience, and the ability to learn.

AI-Assisted Development

We actively use modern AI development tools, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Firebase Studio.

We view AI as a productivity advantage, and we encourage developers to use these tools appropriately.

However, we expect you to understand the code you work with.

You should be capable of:

- Reviewing AI-generated code before using it.
- Identifying incorrect, insecure, or inefficient solutions.
- Debugging and improving generated code.
- Recognizing security, performance, and maintainability risks.
- Independently validating functionality before deployment.

We want someone who uses AI to become a more effective developer, not someone who depends on AI to perform work they cannot independently evaluate.

What We're Looking For

You may be a strong fit if you:

- Enjoy hands-on development and technical problem-solving.
- Have real WordPress coding experience beyond using page builders.
- Can independently troubleshoot unfamiliar technical issues.
- Take ownership rather than waiting for detailed instructions.
- Prefer long-term solutions over repeated temporary fixes.
- Can balance speed with accuracy and reliability.
- Are comfortable working with existing and sometimes complex systems.
- Can clearly explain technical issues to non-technical colleagues.
- Are organized, dependable, and proactive.

- Enjoy improving systems that have a direct impact on business operations and customer experience.

What Success Looks Like

During your first several months, we would expect to see:

- Strong familiarity with our existing WordPress environment.
- Faster identification and resolution of website issues.
- Improved website speed, reliability, and mobile performance.
- Successful implementation of new WordPress functionality.
- More consistent testing and safer deployments.
- Fewer recurring technical problems.
- Better collaboration between development and SEO.
- Progress on selected web application improvements.
- Reduced dependence on external developers for routine technical work.
- Greater technical ownership of our website and applications.

Ideally, you have:

- 3 years of professional WordPress development experience.
- Strong PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills.
- Experience developing or modifying custom WordPress functionality.
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting production websites.
- Familiarity with databases, APIs, Git, and safe deployment practices.

Experience with React, Next.js, TypeScript, Firebase, or full-stack development is a significant advantage.
