About the role
Contemporary Niagara Building Services is hiring a Power Engineer to run the steam plant at a client facility in Woodstock, Ontario. You will be employed by Modern Niagara and work on site full-time. The plant supplies steam to the whole building, including process equipment that depends on clean, dry steam, so the quality of your daily work matters.
You will be the on-site owner of the boilers and their water treatment, working with the facilities team, the chemical treatment supplier and equipment service providers. A second trade licence, such as plumber, steamfitter or millwright, is a strong asset, because the role also covers general mechanical maintenance across the building.
What you'll do
Boiler plant
– Operate and monitor two Cleaver-Brooks steam boilers on a common header, running one lead and one standby, with a scheduled rotation between them.
– Carry out daily boiler and deaerator blowdowns, low water cut-off tests and other routine safety checks.
– Keep shift logs and respond to alarms, trips and abnormal conditions.
Water treatment
– Test feedwater, boiler water and condensate daily for conductivity, pH, temperature, sulfite, hardness and P and M alkalinity, and log the results.
– Calibrate and look after the test instruments, and keep a calibration record.
– Monitor the Walchem conductivity controllers and the chemical feed pumps, keep the chemical supply stocked, and work with the chemical treatment supplier on dosing and service visits.
– Test chiller and cooling tower water as part of the daily rounds.
Steam distribution
– Maintain steam quality to process equipment: steam traps, drip legs, strainers and air vents.
– Work with the departments that rely on steam, and their equipment service providers, when supply issues come up.

– Carry out mechanical, plumbing and HVAC repairs and maintenance across the facility, including air handling units.
– Coordinate and supervise contractors working on site.
What you need
– A valid Ontario Fourth Class Power Engineer certificate, at minimum. This is required.
– Proven experience operating and maintaining steam boilers.
– Experience in an institutional, commercial or industrial plant is preferred.
– Working knowledge of boiler water treatment: blowdown control, chemical feed and routine water testing.
– Comfort with conductivity controllers, chemical metering pumps and handheld test meters.
– Careful record keeping. Daily logs and test results are part of the facility's compliance record.
– Good communication with building occupants, contractors and suppliers.
– Willingness to follow site safety and access requirements.
