About BTI

BTI is an engineering and technology company supporting industrial facilities across Western Canada. We combine engineering, automation and controls, measurement, digital solutions and IT/OT expertise to solve practical challenges in operating facilities, helping our clients modernize and run critical infrastructure safely, reliably and efficiently. Our people work closely with clients from concept through commissioning, combining technical depth with hands-on execution, accountability and strong working relationships.

We work by four principles: Integrity (we do what’s right, not what’s convenient), Efficiency (we never lose our sense of urgency), Quality (it’s our goal to set up our partners and clients for long-term success) and Innovation (we challenge the status quo to find better solutions).

Why this role exists

BTI is delivering a long-term program of projects to migrate legacy control systems at operating pipeline facilities for a major client. As this work grows, we are looking for a senior electrical engineer to take technical ownership of the electrical and hardware design, become the client’s go-to technical contact, and grow our capacity to lead these projects internally.

What you will accomplish

In your first year, success in this role looks like this:

1. Lead the electrical and control system design. Within your first 3 months, independently lead the electrical and control system design for two of the program’s four projects through detailed design, while providing technical guidance and oversight on all four. You will take professional responsibility for, and stamp, the electrical and control system design packages.

2. Deliver quality design packages. Issue stamped design packages (system architecture, control panels, I/O and field interfaces) on schedule. By working closely with the client during design and following BTI’s established standards, you keep review cycles to a minimum, with the goal of packages passing client review with minor comments only.

3. See the whole project. Keep the design consistent across every discipline, from programming and procurement to construction and commissioning, so integration issues are solved on paper and not in the field.

4.

Become the client’s technical contact. Within 6 months, be the client’s point of contact for the electrical and hardware scope: leading design reviews, running meetings that drive decisions, and managing project documentation.

5. Grow the team. Within 12 months, mentor two intermediate engineers, technologists or designers, and help update our design standards and templates as the program and the team expand.

How you will work

- You set the technical direction for the electrical and control system design. You have no direct reports, so your influence, clarity and credibility drive results.
- You start by applying BTI’s established standards and examples, then help evolve them as the program grows.
- You direct and review the work of designers and drafters. You understand AutoCAD, but you won’t be the one drafting.
- This is an engineering leadership role, not a programming or project management role. However, an understanding of programming workflow and project execution is important for effective technical leadership and coordination.
- You are comfortable in front of the client, especially in the early project stages where scope and design decisions are made.

Where this role can take you

This role is designed to grow. Based on performance, it offers a career path into technical and project leadership, including roles such as Project Lead or Electrical Manager as BTI grows. Future projects will also give you the chance to lead work from Pre-FEED and FEED through detailed design.

What you bring

You have already done this:

- Registered as a Qualified Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or another Canadian engineering regulator, and have stamped control system design drawings (if you are registered outside Alberta, you will need APEGA registration to stamp drawings here)

- Led the electrical and hardware design of industrial control system projects: architecture, control panels, I/O and field interfaces
- Led client design reviews and technical meetings, and kept projects moving toward decisions
- Guided or mentored other engineers, technologists, designers or drafters
- Revised single-line diagrams and electrical equipment drawings, with a solid understanding of power systems (this role does not include designing power systems)
- Worked with PLC-based control system hardware. Schneider Electric experience is preferred; experience with other major platforms, such as Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, is also considered.

Bonus if you have:

- Modicon to Schneider M580 migration experience, or other legacy control system migrations
- Experience with pipeline, terminal, oil and gas or other operating (brownfield) facilities
- Front-end engineering experience (Pre-FEED or FEED)
- Working within strict client engineering standards
- Familiarity with AutoCAD

Location and travel

- Based in our Calgary office. Being with the team matters in this role because of the mentoring and collaboration involved.
- Travel to client sites in the Grande Prairie area about twice a year, for 1–2 weeks at a time, mainly for site walkdowns.

What we offer

- Permanent, full-time employment with a long-term project portfolio
- Competitive compensation, comprehensive health and dental benefits, and paid sick and wellness days
- Professional development, and opportunities to grow your technical and project leadership
- The opportunity to influence how BTI delivers and grows its control system engineering practice

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently residing in Canada and legally authorized to work in Canada. BTI does not provide work permit sponsorship, LMIA support or relocation assistance for this position.
