Developmental Support Worker / Personal Support Worker / Certified Nursing Assistant / Health Care Aide - Oakville, ON - CAD$108.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We are seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 93-year-old woman living in a Viva retirement home in Oakville. She has been diagnosed with dementia for approximately three years and uses a walker, though she primarily relies on a push chair for mobility. While the retirement home provides meals, laundry, and cleaning services, she needs companionship and social engagement. She tends to isolate herself in her apartment and is reluctant to participate in building activities or socialize with other residents, likely due to memory challenges and self-consciousness about her condition. She has three adult children who each visit once weekly, but she needs additional company and support throughout the week.
Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this role is companionship and cognitive engagement. The caregiver will spend time visiting with the client in her apartment, engaging her in conversation, and encouraging participation in retirement home activities. Light assistance with bathing or dressing may be needed. The caregiver should gently encourage her to leave her apartment for walks (weather permitting) or to attend entertainment events in the building lobby. The goal is to provide meaningful social interaction that helps combat isolation and supports her quality of life. Memory prompts and gentle redirection will be important as she frequently asks about the day and time.
What We're Looking For:
We need a caregiver with dementia training who understands how to communicate effectively with individuals experiencing memory loss. The ideal candidate should be mature, patient, calm,
and able to speak explicit English without a heavy accent, as the client has had difficulty understanding previous caregivers. Experience working with seniors with cognitive decline is essential. The caregiver should be warm, bring positive energy, take initiative in engaging the client, be reliable and consistent, and communicate clearly with the family. Someone who can make the client feel comfortable and respected while gently encouraging activity and social participation would be perfect for this role.
Schedule:
Two evenings per week, specifically Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (2-hour visits). The client's brother visits on Wednesday evenings, and other family members typically visit during daytime hours, so these evening slots work best for consistent care without overlap.

Additional Considerations
Seeking a mature caregiver with clear English communication skills who can connect with a 93-year-old client with dementia. Previous caregivers were too young with heavy accents that made communication difficult. The ideal caregiver should be trained in dementia care techniques, know how to encourage participation in activities without causing upset, and be skilled at redirection and memory prompts. Client lives in a retirement home where meals, cleaning, and laundry are provided, so focus is purely on companionship and engagement.
