Job Title: Project / Manufacturing Engineer
Location: Daequip Premium Attachments Ltd., / Dormel Containers Ltd., Abbotsford
Job Type: Full Time (40 hours)
Reports to: Engineering Supervisor
Revised: Oct 2026
Work Setting
Shared Daequip / Dormel facility — shop floor and office. Expect to spend roughly 40% of the week on the floor.
Position Summary
The Project / Manufacturing Engineer learns Dormel’s products from the ground up, partly by working alongside the people who build them, and turns that knowledge into drawings, routings, work instructions, fixtures, and trained people. The role also runs custom and special projects and improves how the shop builds. It suits someone who wants to put on the PPE, pick up a tool when needed, and still leave behind documentation that anyone can follow.
Success here means Dormel’s product and process knowledge lives in the system and in the team, so production, quoting, and delivery keep running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
1. Product & Process Knowledge Capture
The core of the role. Done with the people who hold the knowledge, not around them.
- Learn each Dormel product line end to end: design intent, materials, fit-up and weld sequence, tolerances, common variations, known problem areas, and customer-specific requirements.
- Build and maintain a product knowledge library: current drawings, BOMs, cut lists, routings, fixture and jig details, WPS references, and photos or short videos of critical steps.
- Turn tribal knowledge into standard work and work instructions, validated on the floor with the operators who do the job.
- Maintain a knowledge and skills matrix with Operations that shows where critical know-how rests with a single person, then close each gap through documentation and cross-training.
- Become a capable backup for product, build, and process questions when the Operations team is unavailable.
2. Project Management & Custom Order Engineering
- Own engineering and execution coordination for custom, special, and current-product projects from RFQ through first article and shipment: scope, drawings, BOM, material, schedule, and risks.
- Support Sales on feasibility, labour-hour, and material estimates so quotes reflect how the product is actually built.
- Run project kickoffs, track milestones, and give Operations, Scheduling, Sales, and Management clear, timely status.
- Manage engineering change requests and revision control so there is one current version of every drawing and BOM.
3. Manufacturing Engineering & Floor Support (Hands-On)
- Be visible and useful on the floor: troubleshoot fit-up, distortion, tooling, and sequencing problems in real time, and step in to assemble, tack,
or prototype when it helps the team.
- Design, build, and improve fixtures, jigs, and templates that make good work repeatable and reduce dependence on individual skill or memory.
- Develop and maintain routings, standard times, and cycle times, and keep them current with how work is really done.
- Support first-article builds and trial runs, and train operators and new hires on the documented standards.
4. Quality & Safety
- Verify product against drawings and specifications, and support inspection checklists and first-piece checks.
- Lead root-cause analysis and corrective action on non-conformances, and feed the lessons back into work instructions and fixtures.
- Work with Quality on weld procedure and CWB requirements as they apply to Dormel products.
- Review new fixtures, tooling, and processes for safety, participate in hazard assessments, and follow WorkSafeBC and company safety requirements.
5. Continuous Improvement
- Take part in the 8 Wastes (DOWNTIME) audits and own assigned items on the CI Task Tracker through to closure.
- Use time studies, bottleneck analysis, layout review, 5S, and changeover reduction to improve flow and capacity.
- Reduce rework and scrap by fixing root causes in the design, the fixture, or the instruction rather than the symptom.
- Lead established KPI achievement
6. Cross-Functional & Shared-Site Coordination
- Coordinate with Daequip teams on shared equipment and floor space (CNC, plasma, press brake, paint) so both companies’ schedules hold.
- Work with Purchasing and suppliers on material specifications, alternates, and lead-time risks for Dormel products.
- Keep ERP item masters, BOMs, and routings accurate, and keep files organised with consistent naming so anyone can find the current information.
First 12 Months
A learning-first ramp. Documentation output grows as product knowledge deepens.
Timeframe
Focus and Expected Outcome
First 30 days
Safety orientation and floor rotation across fabrication, welding, assembly, and shipping. Learn the product lines by building alongside the team. Meet the people who hold the knowledge and agree how to capture it.
By 90 days
Complete documentation packages (drawings, BOM, routing, work instruction) for the first priority products.
Take on a first small project. Start the knowledge and skills matrix with Operations.
By 3 months
Run custom projects with Sales and Operations. Priority products documented and validated on the floor. First fixtures and standard-time improvements in use.
By 6 months
Core Dormel product lines documented and trained to a second person. Leads projects independently and can cover product and build questions when Operations is away.
Qualifications
Required
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering or Engineering Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years in a metal fabrication, welding, or heavy-fabrication environment, ideally in a project or manufacturing engineering role.
- Able to read and interpret fabrication drawings and weld symbols with confidence.
- Working knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, or AutoCAD) and strong Excel skills; ERP experience.
- Hands-on: comfortable on the shop floor and willing to assemble, fit, and prototype alongside the team.
- Clear, structured writer who can turn how something is done into instructions others can follow.
Assets
- Welding ticket or welding experience.
- EIT, P.Eng., or ASTTBC designation, or progress toward one.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or project management training (CAPM, PMP).
- Experience with steel structures, container, or modular products; forklift and overhead crane tickets.
Personal Attributes
- Curious and humble learner who respects the experience on the floor and knows how to draw knowledge out of people.
- Patient, diplomatic, and collaborative; builds trust with long-service team members and leaders alike.
- Organised and thorough, with a bias for finishing what is started and leaving things documented.
- Self-directed, safety-minded, and comfortable moving between the floor and the office in the same day.
- Practical problem solver who prefers a simple fixture or clear instruction over a complicated fix.
Working Conditions
Shop floor and office environment in a shared facility. Required PPE, lifting, standing, and walking are part of the job. Occasional extended hours may be needed around project launches and deliveries.
Position Objective
Make Dormel’s product and process knowledge a shared, documented, and teachable asset, while delivering custom projects and manufacturing improvements that make the shop safer, faster, and more consistent.
