Our platform connects edge devices, gateways (LoRaWAN / Zigbee / LTE), cloud services, and mobile applications to deliver real-time monitoring, automation, and analytics. We help property owners, strata corporations, and insurers reduce claims exposure and property damage, with a vision of moving the insurance industry from reactive claims response toward proactive risk prevention.

Role Overview

We are hiring a Senior Backend Engineer with strong IoT knowledge to help design and develop our cloud platform. You will build the services that receive data from thousands of sensors, turn it into early warnings, and trigger automated actions before small issues become costly losses.

This role requires at least 5 years of backend development experience and hands-on familiarity with IoT systems and device communication workflows. This is an onsite position in Burnaby.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and maintain backend services for IoT device connectivity and lifecycle management
- Develop APIs for mobile apps, web portals, and third-party integrations
- Implement telemetry ingestion, storage, and processing pipelines
- Build real-time communication services using MQTT, WebSocket, and HTTP
- Integrate and customize IoT platforms such as ThingsBoard
- Support LoRaWAN network server integration (ChirpStack preferred)
- Design databases and data models, including time-series and event data
- Optimize the platform for performance, reliability,



and scalability, so critical alerts are delivered on time
- Implement security mechanisms, including authentication, encryption, and access control
- Collaborate with firmware, mobile, and AI teams
- Support deployment, debugging, and production monitoring

Required Qualifications

- 5+ years of backend development experience
- Proficiency in Java and Kotlin
- Experience with the Spring framework
- Experience building RESTful APIs
- Solid understanding of reactive streams and asynchronous programming
- Solid understanding of IoT architectures and cloud-connected devices
- Hands-on experience with IoT protocols: MQTT, HTTP/HTTPS, WebSocket
- Experience handling real-time or high-frequency telemetry data
- Experience with ThingsBoard (development, customization, or integration)
- Database experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or similar
- Familiarity with AWS
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Understanding of backend security best practices

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with ChirpStack (highly preferred)
- Experience with LoRaWAN-based systems
- Experience with other JVM frameworks such as Quarkus or Micronaut
- Experience with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or EMQX
- Experience with time-series databases such as InfluxDB or TimescaleDB
- CI/CD and DevOps exposure
