Senior Backend Engineer

This is an prospect for an accomplished backend engineer to join a scaling engineering organization at a pivotal stage. You will design and build the services, APIs, and data systems behind a fast-growing product, working with strong engineers and team leads who care about quality and speed.

We are looking for someone who has built production backend systems that grew with the business. You make sound architectural decisions, write code others enjoy working in, and raise the standard for the engineers around you.

You will work alongside product engineers, team leads, and the engineering leadership team in a highly collaborative environment where Engineering is a strategic partner to the business.

The Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the design, delivery, and operation of backend services that power customer-facing products and internal operations, including logistics and customer workflows.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable backend services and REST APIs
- Own features end to end, from technical design and implementation through testing, release, and monitoring
- Make and document sound architectural decisions, and manage technical debt deliberately
- Model data and design schemas that perform well as volume and complexity grow
- Build integrations with third-party services, internal systems, and partner APIs, including webhooks and event-driven workflows
- Partner with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to scope work, shape APIs, and deliver outcomes that matter to customers
- Review code, set engineering standards, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers
- Improve performance, reliability, and observability across the backend,



and take part in incident response and root-cause analysis
- Contribute to technical planning and roadmap discussions alongside team leads and engineering leadership

Technical Scope

Languages and frameworks

- Node.js with Express or similar frameworks; TypeScript strongly preferred
- Experience with a second backend language (for example C#/.NET, Python, or Go) is a plus

APIs and architecture

- RESTful API design, versioning, authentication and authorization (OAuth 2.0, JWT), and rate limiting
- Service-oriented and microservices architectures, including service boundaries and inter-service communication
- Asynchronous and event-driven processing: queues, background jobs, and webhooks

Data

- MongoDB and PostgreSQL (or comparable relational databases): schema design, indexing, query optimization, and migrations
- Caching strategies, for example with Redis

Cloud, delivery, and operations

- Cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, and containerization with Docker
- CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and safe release practices
- Logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting to keep services healthy in production

Quality and security

- Unit, integration, and API testing, with automated test suites in CI
- Secure coding practices, secrets management, and protection of sensitive customer and shipment data

Who You Are

- You are an experienced backend engineer who has built and operated production systems at a scale-up or growing company
- You have strong judgment on systems design and trade-offs, and you explain your reasoning clearly
- You take ownership: you see work through to production and care how it behaves once it is there




- You are comfortable with ambiguity and can turn loosely defined problems into clear technical plans
- You write clean, tested, maintainable code and hold high standards in code review
- You enjoy mentoring and raising the level of the team around you
- You communicate well in writing and in person with technical and non-technical colleagues
- You are collaborative and low-ego, and you are comfortable challenging ideas constructively

You Bring

- 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience
- Strong, hands-on experience with Node.js (TypeScript preferred) and building REST APIs
- Solid experience with both NoSQL and relational databases, including performance tuning
- Experience designing distributed systems or microservices in a cloud environment
- Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and production monitoring
- Experience integrating with third-party APIs and building reliable asynchronous workflows
- Familiarity with full-stack development (React or similar) and the ability to work well with frontend engineers
- Willingness to work hybrid, based in or near Toronto

Nice to Have

- Experience in logistics, supply chain, shipping, or other operations-heavy software
- Experience in a product-led SaaS or enterprise software environment
- Experience leading technical projects or mentoring engineers informally
- Contributions to technical writing, open source, or conference talks
