Starting wage: Ontario minimum wage, with opportunities for advancement and wage increases as skills and responsibilities grow
Positions available: Part-Time & Full-Time
Location: Field-based — travelling between client homes in your own vehicle
Reimbursements: Gas allowance is given Bi-Weekly on pay check for travel expenses.
Love animals? This job is more than wagging tails.
Some days are sunny walks and happy dogs.
Other days involve muddy paws, litter boxes, nervous pets, barking, pulling, scratches, slobber, poop, vomit, snowstorms and the occasional pet that would rather you weren't there.
That is professional pet care, and we're looking for people who are comfortable with all of it.
What You'll Do
As a Pet Care Specialist, you'll travel between client homes providing the care each pet needs, including:
- Dog walks and exercise
- Cat and small-animal visits
- Feeding and fresh water
- Potty breaks and litter care
- Pet sitting and companionship
- Enrichment and basic training reinforcement
- Medication support within your training
- Cleaning pet-related messes
- Monitoring behaviour, health and safety
- Securing client homes after every visit
- Taking photos and completing service reports
- Communicating with management when something isn't right
You'll work independently in the field while staying connected to our management team throughout your shift.
Schedule & Hours
Our services operate in four main windows:
7–10 AM | 10 AM–2 PM | 2–5 PM | 5–8 PM
The 10 AM–2 PM window is our busiest and is an important part of team availability.
We are currently hiring for:
Part-Time: From 5 hours Up to approximately 30 hours per week
Full-Time: Approximately 30–40 hours per week
Pet care follows our clients' schedules, so hours, routes and start/finish times can vary from week to week.
Weekend, Holidays and Split Shifts Are Part of Pet Care
Some days may include one continuous route.
Other days may involve a split shift, such as working a morning or midday route, having a break between service windows, and returning later for afternoon or evening visits.
Visits may also be added, cancelled or adjusted as client needs change.
This role is a good fit for someone who values flexibility and understands that working with pets doesn't always follow a traditional 9–5 schedule.
Safety Comes First
We don't simply clip on a leash and head out the door.
You'll receive paid training in Out N About's professional handling and safety standards, including:
- Safe leash handling
- Equipment fit and backup connections
- Loose-leash walking
- Threshold and doorway management
- Canine and Feline body-language awareness
- Managing excitement and reactivity
- Avoiding uncontrolled greetings with unfamiliar dogs
- Home and yard safety checks
- Weather and wellness protocols
You don't need to arrive knowing everything.
You DO need to be coachable, observant and willing to learn.
You May Be a Good Fit If You Are
Reliable, calm and comfortable working independently.
You notice small details.
You follow written instructions closely.
You aren't afraid to call a manager when you're unsure.
You're comfortable working with dogs of different sizes, personalities and energy levels.
You're comfortable entering client homes independently.
You can work outside in rain, heat, cold, snow and mud.
And you understand that animal care can include bites, scratches, barking, accidents and messy cleanups, right alongside cuddles, happy pets and plenty of wagging tails.
Requirements
You must have:
- Valid Ontario G2 or G driver's licence
- Your own reliable vehicle
- Valid vehicle insurance
- Smartphone with data
- Comfort using apps, GPS, photos and written reports
- Reliable availability during agreed service windows
- Solid availability during our 10 AM–2 PM peak period
- Ability to accommodate split shifts based on your agreed availability
- Ability to complete paid training and practical handling assessments
- Ability to pass required reference/background screening
Driving between client homes is a significant part of this position.
Training & Advancement
All team members complete paid onboarding, mentorship and practical training.
As your skills, reliability and responsibilities grow, there are opportunities to advance into more experienced field positions, specialized services, mentoring and leadership support.
Advancement can include increased responsibilities, additional scheduling opportunities and wage progression.
This Role May Not Be the Right Fit If You…
- Want a casual dog-walking side gig
- Dislike driving
- Are uncomfortable cleaning up after animals
- Don't want to work outdoors in changing weather
- Dislike using apps, GPS, checklists or written reports
- Require exactly the same start and finish time every day
- Cannot accommodate occasional split shifts within your agreed availability
- Prefer to guess rather than contacting management when you're unsure
- Mainly want a job where you get paid to play with dogs
There is plenty of fun in this work — but our clients trust us with their pets, homes and safety, and we take that responsibility seriously.
