Summary
The NET Program is seeking a certified Physician Assistant (PA) to join its outpatient team caring for patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms. A central part of this role is helping to lead the program’s Radioligand Therapy (RLT) service , including peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with 177Lu-DOTATATE. The PA will coordinate patient selection, treatment delivery and long-term follow-up in close partnership with medical oncology, nuclear medicine, radiation safety, pharmacy and nursing. The PA will also provide general clinical care in the NET clinic, take part in quality and safety initiatives, and contribute to trainee education. The PA works under the supervision of a staff medical oncologist, and alongside residents and clinical fellows.
Key Responsibilities
Radioligand Therapy (RLT) Service
Help lead the day-to-day operation of the RLT service, serving as a main point of contact for patients and the treating team.
Assess eligibility for RLT, including review of somatostatin receptor PET/CT, laboratory results, renal and bone marrow function, and prior treatments.
Coordinate treatment scheduling and pre-treatment workup with nuclear medicine, pharmacy, radiation safety and nursing.
Educate patients and families about RLT, including what to expect, radiation safety precautions and side effects, and support the informed consent process.
Monitor patients between and after treatment cycles for toxicity, manage side effects, and arrange appropriate follow-up and surveillance.
Contribute to RLT protocols, patient education materials and quality monitoring.
Clinical Care
Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations for new and returning NET patients in clinic, and on the inpatient units when needed.
Develop and document assessments and management plans in collaboration with the supervising physician.
Order diagnostic tests and provide preliminary interpretation, including biochemical markers (e.g., 24-hour urine 5-HIAA, chromogranin A), cross-sectional imaging and somatostatin receptor PET/CT.
Manage systemic therapies, including somatostatin analogues, targeted therapies and chemotherapy, covering initiation, dose adjustment and monitoring for treatment-related effects.
Provide patient and family education on diagnosis, treatment options, expected course and when to seek care.
Present patients at the NET tumour board and multidisciplinary case conferences.
Research, Quality and Education
Serve as a sub-investigator on NET clinical trials, including systemic and radiopharmaceutical therapy trials: identify and enrol patients, complete protocol assessments, and carry out study procedures in keeping with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Research Ethics Board (REB) requirements.
Contribute to clinical research, data collection and outcome tracking.
Take part in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives within the program.
Support the teaching of residents, fellows and other learners.
