1 Position

Shape quality from the beginning of a new product team

Kongsberg Maritime is expanding its Maritime Simulation organization, MSIM, with a new product team in Halifax.

We are looking for a Senior Software Quality Engineer to take a leading role in establishing how the team approaches quality, testing, and release confidence. You will work alongside senior full stack engineers and a product owner to deliver applications and services built on top of our maritime simulation platform.

The team will create user-facing capabilities, application logic, integrations, and workflows using platform services, REST APIs, and internal tools. Your role will cover both exploratory and automated testing, with particular attention to application behavior, API integrations, end-to-end workflows, and the risks created by distributed system boundaries.

This is not a role where quality is checked only at the end of development. You will help the team define acceptance criteria, identify risks early, design effective test strategies, and build quality into its everyday engineering practices.

What you will do

- Define and continuously improve the quality strategy for the Halifax product team
- Work with the product owner and developers to make requirements clear, testable, and measurable
- Identify product, integration, performance, and regression risks early in the development process
- Design, implement, and maintain automated tests for web applications, backend services, and REST APIs
- Create appropriate test coverage across unit, component, integration, contract, end-to-end, and exploratory testing
- Verify application logic and workflows built on top of the maritime simulation platform
- Test integrations between team-owned software, platform services, and internal tools
- Perform risk-based exploratory testing of new and changed functionality
- Incorporate automated tests and quality gates into CI/CD pipelines
- Support effective defect investigation, reproduction, prioritization, and root cause analysis
- Help the team assess release readiness using clear evidence and agreed quality criteria
- Define helpful quality indicators and communicate risks clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders

- Collaborate with QA and engineering colleagues in Norway and Bulgaria
- Contribute to test environments, test data, tooling, documentation, and observability
- Advocate for usability, reliability, maintainability, and the overall customer experience
- Help establish a strong quality culture in which the whole team shares responsibility for the product

What we are looking for

- This position supports government defense-related projects and is subject to contractual security requirements. Applicants must be Canadian citizens and be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Reliability Status.
- Five or more years of professional experience in software quality engineering, software testing, or test automation
- Strong experience testing modern web applications, REST APIs, and backend services
- Hands-on experience developing and maintaining automated test solutions
- Experience with API-testing tools and modern web automation frameworks
- Good understanding of software development lifecycles and Agile product development
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD workflows
- Ability to choose the right level and type of testing for a given risk
- Experience creating test plans, test scenarios, acceptance criteria, and traceable test evidence
- Strong exploratory testing, analytical, and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to investigate failures across application and integration boundaries
- Confidence working independently and establishing quality practices within a new team
- Experience collaborating effectively with developers and product management
- Experience working in a distributed or international organization
- Clear written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to communicate quality risks constructively and support pragmatic delivery decisions

It would be an advantage if you have

- Experience with Postman, REST Assured, or comparable API-testing tools
- Experience with Microsoft Azure, Azure Dev Ops,

Git Hub Actions, or comparable platforms
- Experience with API contract testing and service virtualization
- Experience with performance, load, resilience, or reliability testing
- Experience testing enterprise, industrial, training, or simulation products
- Familiarity with observability, logging, metrics, and distributed-system troubleshooting
- Experience with maritime, defense, gaming, logistics, or other domain-intensive systems
- Experience setting up a quality approach for a new product or engineering team

Maritime or simulation experience is helpful, but it is not required. You will work with domain specialists and technical teams who can help you learn the platform and its operational context.

How we work

You will join a senior, cross-functional Halifax team that owns meaningful product outcomes. A product owner will provide product direction and priorities, while the team determines how best to design, build, test, and deliver the solution.

The wider MSIM organization will provide platform capabilities, APIs, tools, technical expertise, and domain support. Because many colleagues are based in Norway and Bulgaria, you will need to communicate effectively across locations, document decisions clearly, and make progress without relying on continuous real-time coordination.

As the team’s senior quality specialist, you will guide its quality approach. At the same time, quality will remain a shared responsibility across engineering and product management.

- Establish the quality practices of a new Halifax product team
- Influence architecture, testability, and delivery practices from the beginning
- Work with advanced maritime simulation technology and complex end-to-end workflows
- Combine hands-on testing with automation, strategy, and continuous improvement
- Collaborate with specialists across software engineering, simulation, UX, and maritime operations
- Help deliver reliable products that support professional training and safer maritime operations
- Join an international technology organization while having strong ownership within a local team

Help us build quality into the products, processes, and culture of Kongsberg Maritime’s expanding Maritime Simulation organization.
