About SurfaceWorx
SurfaceWorx is looking for a detail-oriented and technically skilled CAD Designer to join our team and support the design, engineering, and fabrication of custom stone and architectural surface projects.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, along with experience using Autodesk ReCap Pro and 3D laser scanning/point-cloud data.
This is an on-site position in Etobicoke, working closely with project managers, fabricators, installers, and designers to convert architectural drawings, site conditions, and 3D scan data into accurate, fabrication-ready drawings and 3D models.
Key Responsibilities
- Create detailed 2D fabrication drawings and 3D models for custom stone, countertops, fireplaces, feature walls, floors, stairs, vanities, and other architectural surfaces.
- Develop accurate 3D models using Autodesk Inventor based on architectural drawings, site measurements, and 3D scan data.
- Use AutoCAD to prepare detailed plans, elevations, sections, dimensions, templates, and fabrication drawings.
- Process and analyze 3D laser scan data using Autodesk ReCap Pro.
- Register, clean, inspect, and work with point-cloud data for accurate CAD modelling.
- Convert actual site conditions into accurate CAD geometry for fabrication and installation.
- Perform floor, wall, and surface condition analysis, including identifying high and low areas and deviations from required elevations.
- Design accurate cutouts and openings for plumbing fixtures, electrical components, drains, sinks, outlets, and other site conditions.
- Develop fabrication details for mitered edges, bookmatched panels, integrated sinks, seams, joints, returns, and custom assemblies.
- Coordinate dimensions and tolerances to achieve accurate field installation, typically within 1–2 mm where required.
- Prepare fabrication-ready files such as DXF, DWG, STEP, and IGES when required.
- Review drawings and 3D models for accuracy, manufacturability, material thickness, clearances, and installation requirements.
- Work with production and installation teams to resolve design, fabrication, and field-condition issues.
- Visit job sites when required to perform scanning, measurements, verification, and site-condition documentation.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong experience with AutoCAD.
- Robust experience with Autodesk Inventor.
- Experience with Autodesk ReCap Pro and point-cloud/3D scan data.
- Strong understanding of technical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, sections, and fabrication details.
- Ability to interpret architectural drawings and translate field conditions into accurate fabrication models.
- Experience with 3D laser scanning and scan-to-CAD workflows is highly preferred.
- Understanding of stone, countertop, architectural surface, millwork, or similar fabrication processes is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and dimensional accuracy.
- Ability to troubleshoot design and fabrication issues independently.
- Strong communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Experience Experience with any of the following would be an advantage:
- Trimble X7 / Trimble Perspective
- Point-cloud processing
- Scan-to-CAD / Scan-to-BIM workflows
- CNC programming or fabrication
- DXF/DWG/STEP/IGES file preparation
- GD&T; and dimensional tolerancing
Scan-to-Fabrication Workflow The successful candidate will be involved in the complete workflow: 3D Laser Scan → ReCap Pro → Point-Cloud Analysis → AutoCAD → Inventor 3D Model → Fabrication Drawings → CNC/Fabrication → Installation The CAD Designer will play an important role in ensuring that the digital design accurately represents the actual site conditions and can be successfully fabricated and installed in the field.
